NFL Draft: Could QB Ty Simpson bolster Browns? Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer comments

Former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson is one of the 2026 NFL Draft’s most polarizing prospects, his hype level hitting a fever pitch ahead of his pro day after analyst Dan Orlovsky said he was better than projected No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza.

In his only season as the Crimson Tide starter, Simpson completed 64.5% of his passes for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns with just five interceptions, numbers that paled in comparison to Mendoza’s production en route to winning the Heisman. However, it’s Simpson’s IQ level and ceiling that make him a coveted first-round prospect.

During an appearance on a Cleveland-based radio show, Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer discussed why the Cleveland Browns would be smart to take Simpson with one of their two Day 1 selections.

“Even though he hasn’t played a lot of starts, he’s been around college football at a high level, and he’s the son of a coach,” DeBoer said Wednesday on The Ken Carman Show. “He’s just done a great job. Last year, he really did an excellent job taking big steps forward, big chunks going from playing a little bit in the previous years to starting the season fast and making a lot of big plays for us.

“He understands the game. He understands not just the Xs and Os, but what the quarterback’s job is…. we put a lot of his shoulders to check things. He gets it all. He did a great job managing the game and making big plays for us.”

  • DJ Lagway leaves Florida drama behind him, rewriting his story at Baylor | Exclusive

DJ Lagway leaves Florida drama behind him, rewriting his story at Baylor | Exclusive

WACO, TX – We begin in a lecture hall on the campus of Baylor University, where the new quarterback found himself in a strange environment not long ago. In a class, with other students. And no one knew or cared who he was.

They only saw DJ Lagway, only noticed his 6-4, 235-pound frame, because he was the late guy pushing through creaky doors announcing his arrival.

Not the former 5-star, can’t-miss prospect trying to find the magic again. Not the budding superstar turned public face of the failure at Florida, unfairly burdened by injury circumstances out of his control.

So he shuffled to the only row with an available seat, in the middle of all that humanity, and squeezed into his new reality. His new life. All arms and legs and shoe-horned in with every other student, knees pressing against the row in front of him. Elbows tight to his side, chin to his chest.

And about as far away from an insular and depressing time in Gainesville, Fla. — geographically and metaphorically — as he could possibly be. Two years where he admits he made mistakes as the Gators’ high-priced quarterback and program savior, where the Florida staff made mistakes, too, and where significant injuries lobbed on top of it all quickly derailed development at a position where day-to-day growth is vital to survival.

“It was crazy,” Lagway said of his first class at Baylor, his first in a real classroom since high school. “But it was also kind of like, OK, this is how it’s supposed to be.”

    How it’s supposed be.

A fortunate choice of words, a fitting explanation of his time at Florida that began with carrying the weight of the one player who would — in no certain order — save the program and embattled coach Bill Napier’s job, win a Heisman Trophy or two, and win a championship at the school for the first time…

Cowboys news: Brian Schottenheimer talks NFL draft strategy

The Dallas Cowboys’ Pro Day tour carries on, as schools around the country host a combine-type event on their campuses for their draft-eligible talent to show one last piece of their on-field game before next month’s draft.

Last week, we detailed 14 stops that the Cowboys made to begin Pro Day season. And this week, the focus is around a large contigency that includes head coach Brian Schottenheimer, defensive coordinator Christian Parker, vice president of player personnel Will McClay and a handful of scouts making the rounds.

On Monday, the group attended Miami’s Pro Day, where expected first-round edge rushers Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor were on display alongside offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa, nickel cornerback Keionte Scott, quarterback Carson Beck, linebacker Wesley Bissainthe, wide receiver C.J. Daniels, center James Brockermeyer, defensive tackle David Blay and linebacker Mohamed Toure.

On Tuesday, the group is at Texas, where it is getting a close-up view of cornerback Malik Muhammad, linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., tight end Jack Endries, offensive guard D.J. Campbell, defensive end Ethan Burke, defensive end Trey Moore, cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau and safety Michael Taaffe. Schottenheimer and Parker had dinner with Hill on Monday night.

  • Joe Flacco returns to Bengals on one-year deal after Pro Bowl 2025 season

Joe Flacco returns to Bengals on one-year deal after Pro Bowl 2025 season

Joe Flacco has parlayed his first Pro Bowl campaign into a return to the Cincinnati Bengals on a one-year deal, according to CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones. The deal is worth $6 million, with an additional $3 million available in incentives, per NFL Media.

Flacco, 41, will return to a Bengals team that also recently signed fellow quarterback Josh Johnson, another member of the 2008 NFL Draft class who turns 40 on May 15.

Flacco rejoining Cincinnati isn’t surprising given his strong 2025 play and what Bengals coach Zac Taylor said late last season when asked about Flacco coming back in 2026.

“I think it’d be valuable,” Taylor said. “I think he’s a starting quarterback in the NFL. And so I think anytime you’ve experienced that and you’re able to get him back, that’d be great.”

The 2026 season will be his 19th in the NFL. The 18th overall pick in 2008, Flacco spent his first 11 seasons with the Ravens, which included a memorable playoff run in 2012 that ended with Flacco winning Super…

  • Bill Belichick ‘on the same page’ with new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino

Bill Belichick ‘on the same page’ with new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino

Bill Belichick is energized by Bobby Petrino’s arrival as North Carolina looks to transform its offense this spring. Petrino, the program’s biggest offseason addition, brings a tempo-driven spread system built on explosive plays and quarterback development — elements Belichick said mirror aspects of his success with the New England Patriots.

“We’ve had a pretty easy time getting on the same page,” Belichick said during the Tar Heels spring football press conference. “We just weren’t able to really get there last year for a number of reasons. This year, we’re much further ahead in that process. Bobby comes with a ton of experience and has had great production everywhere he’s been. He’s been great to work with and he’s got a great grasp of offensive football.

“I’d say it’s going to be similar to the relationship I had with Josh McDaniels as an offensive coordinator, where they’re calling it, they’re running it, but there’s certain things we’re going to collaborate on and that’s where it’ll be.”

Belichick said the program was “late” last spring in several key areas — including recruiting and the transfer portal — following his December 2025 arrival. North Carolina is better positioned this spring, with 20 transfers and more than two dozen early enrollees from the 2026 signing class helping establish depth.

Belichick moved on from offensive play-caller Freddie Kitchens after a 4-8 finish, much of it tied to offensive struggles. The Tar Heels averaged 290.9 yards per game, fifth-worst nationally, and scored 22 offensive touchdowns, the fewest in the ACC.

A former head coach at Arkansas, Petrino returned to Arkansas in 2024 after a season at Texas A&M under Jimbo Fisher. He briefly served as interim coach last season after the Razorbacks…

  • Raiders fans are thrilled Maxx Crosby is back with team

Raiders fans are thrilled Maxx Crosby is back with team

It’s been a wild ride for Las Vegas Raiders fans as they followed the crazy Maxx Crosby saga.

In a matter of days, the superstar pass-rusher was headed to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for two first-round draft picks to the trade being called off because Crosby failed a physical.

We asked our community members if they are happy that Crosby is expected back or would they rather have the two first rounders to help the rebuild.

The answer was overwhelming as about 75 percent of the poll takers are happy Crosby is back. Moods can change quickly. When, the trade was agreed up, we asked fans how they felt about it and 70 percent were happy with the deal.

Here are some of your responses:

    BladeRaider

I think he’s resigned to the fact that no one is going to give the Raiders 2 ones for him and they’re not going to lower the asking price. He wants to move on from this ( for now) and focus on playing football.

    SeaofHands74

Feel fine, I really didn’t want to see him go, as I’ve said before, I really like players who really love being a Raider, he is just desperate to win, we need both.

    reyder

At first I only wanted the best for Maxx with what happened at the end of last year. I wanted him forever to be a Raider until he hung up his cleats, and if ever traded, I wanted an opportunity for him to reach the Super Bowl before he retires from the NFL.

He was traded, and I will always be thankful for watching him play in Oakland, and now Las Vegas. Plus his heart was not staying with the Raider Nation after the Pete Carroll disaster. He will long be missed, but never forgotten.

But now with this debacle with what the Ravens caused, Maxx will be 100% hungry to prove the NFL that Baltimore made the biggest mistake in…

  • Notre Dame Football’s support staff is either the fastest or slowest in the nation

Notre Dame Football’s support staff is either the fastest or slowest in the nation

With Pro Day here for the Notre Dame football program, there will be a lot of focus on what the 40 yard dash times will be from the players that weren’t at the combine — and from some that want to improve on their times.

There are a lot of players that want in on that action, and on Monday, it looks like the Notre Dame support staff wanted a piece of that action as well. It’s hard to know if this is the fastest or slowest support staff in the country (or something in between) but that’s only because they are the only ones with enough guts to put it out there.

It should be noted that Eli’s time would be the fastest ever at the NFL Draft — SO TAKE THAT!

  • Aaron Rodgers Steelers timeline: Latest news, updates on 2026 decision

Aaron Rodgers Steelers timeline: Latest news, updates on 2026 decision

Another offseason, another round of speculation about Aaron Rodgers’ NFL future. Like his predecessor (Brett Favre) in Green Bay two decades earlier, the tail end of Rodgers’ career has been defined, at least in part, by uncertainty — offseasons that, so far, have ended with him returning for one more year in what will ultimately be a Hall of Fame career.

Rodgers, 42, is currently a free agent after spending the 2025 season in Pittsburgh on a one-year deal. In his first year with the Steelers, he played well enough to help Pittsburgh win 10 games and capture its first division title since 2020. His performance was even more impressive considering he played the final six games with multiple fractures in his left wrist. The Steelers went 4-2 in those games, with the second loss a season-ending defeat to the Texans in the AFC wild-card round — extending Pittsburgh’s playoff win drought to nine seasons.

Immediately after the season ended, Rodgers expressed appreciation for the Steelers while confirming…
