Former Badger QB Scott Tolzien expected to be promoted on Dallas Cowboys staff

Former Wisconsin Badger and Green Bay Packer quarterback Scott Tolzien has received a promotion on the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff according to a report from Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News.

Tolzien spent 2006-10 as a Badger, and later served as an offensive analyst for the Wisconsin coaching staff in 2019. He earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2010 after leading the Badgers to an 11-2 record.

Tolzien is expected to be promoted to quarterbacks coach. He is currently an offensive assistant coach with the Cowboys under former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy. Tolzien played for McCarthy in Green Bay before reuniting in Dallas.

  • Only concern is Washington, we can talk about being a head coach next year

Only concern is Washington, we can talk about being a head coach next year

New Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy says now is not the time to talk about becoming a head coach.

At his introductory press conference in Washington today, Bieniemy said it wouldn’t be fair to the Commanders or his players if he were focusing right now on his desire to be a head coach.

“Right now I’m the offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders,” Bieniemy said. “Being a head coach, if that’s to happen it will take care of itself. We’ve had a great deal of success. We went to five straight AFC Championship Games, three out of four Super Bowls, two out of those we won. Being a head coach, it hasn’t happened, it’s not anything that’s going to impact me moving forward because the only thing I need to be concerned with is what’s important today.

“Today, I’ve got to be the best person I can be, I’ve got to be the best coach I can be, and on top of that, I’ve got to get these guys in this building to learn to trust me, to get to know me, but also to understand what the term accountability means. I have to be accountable to these men. All that stuff about being a head coach, we can talk about that next year some time. Right now I need to focus on the job at hand.”

Despite the Chiefs’ success with Bieniemy as their offensive coordinator the last five years, Bieniemy has been repeatedly passed over for head-coaching jobs. A good season for the offense in Washington could earn Bieniemy a head-coaching job a year from now, but Bieniemy says that is not his focus at the moment.

  • 49ers’ Brock Purdy postpones UCL surgery on doctor’s advice, delay won’t alter recovery timeline, per report

49ers’ Brock Purdy postpones UCL surgery on doctor’s advice, delay won’t alter recovery timeline, per report

    USATSI

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will postpone elbow surgery to repair his UCL due to ongoing inflammation, according to Tom Pelissero. The decision to delay the surgery came at the recommendation of Purdy’s doctor, Dr. Keith Meister, whom he visited Tuesday. A follow-up is scheduled for March, according to Pelissero.

The delay will reportedly not alter the recovery timeline as the best result for “so-called internal brace surgery” requires all the inflammation to be gone and Purdy’s full range of motion back. Therefore, Purdy should be ready for the 2023 season.

Purdy injured his elbow during the NFC Championship loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He exited the game, but returned when backup Josh Johnson went out as well. When Purdy returned, it was clear he was playing with a serious elbow injury and struggled to throw downfield.

  • 2023 AAC football schedule by team: Key games, dates as league gets new look by expanding to 14 teams

2023 AAC football schedule by team: Key games, dates as league gets new look by expanding to 14 teams

    USATSI

The American Athletic Conference released its complete schedule for the 2023 college football season on Tuesday as the league prepares to undergo a major realignment. Houston, Cincinnati and UCF are headed to the Big 12 and the league added six new squads to take their place: North Texas, UTSA, Rice, FAU, Charlotte and UAB.

Navy kicks off the AAC season with a trip to Ireland to play against Notre Dame during Week Zero. The rest of the conference begins with a bang as AAC schools play Houston, Michigan and Texas in Week 1. Clemson, Alabama, Washington and Oklahoma rank among other key nonconference games as the conferences attempts to build its brand on the national stage.

The schedule also features headlining matchups moving off Saturdays. SMU will play rival North Texas on Friday, Nov. 10 in their first intra-conference matchup. Tulane also travels to Memphis on Friday, Oct. 13, while new member UTSA could play its final two games on Friday nights.

Cincinnati, UCF and Houston represent more than half of the championships in AAC history. With those three gone, there’s an opportunity for new powers to rise.

The AAC opted to keep scheduling flexibility for television during the last week of the season. Four conference matchups involving eight of the 14 conference teams could be flexed to Black Friday, including a marquee matchup between reigning AAC champs Tulane and Conference USA champs UTSA. The 2023 AAC Championship Game will take place on Dec. 2.

  • Conor McDermott to re-sign with Patriots on new contract

Conor McDermott to re-sign with Patriots on new contract

Report: Patriots re-signing Conor McDermott in logical move for team originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The New England Patriots need to make their offensive line a priority this offseason, and it appears the work has already begun on that front.

The Patriots and offensive tackle Conor McDermott have agreed to terms on a new contract, The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride reported Saturday night.

New England signed McDermott essentially as an emergency pickup last season, scooping him off the New York Jets’ practice squad on Nov. 22 after injuries to Marcus Cannon and Isaiah Wynn left the team without a starting right tackle.

Curran’s roster reset: Offensive line should be Patriots’ top priority

McDermott capably filled the void, starting the Patriots’ final six games at right tackle and allowing zero sacks during that span.

“Thank God we have him,” head coach Bill Belichick said of McDermott in late December. “He’s done a good job. He’s been dependable and tough. He’s been out there, been durable.”

McDermott also played for new Patriots offensive line coach Adrian Klemm at UCLA when Klemm worked as the Bruins’ associate head coach, run game coordinator and offensive line coach, so bringing the 30-year-old veteran back made plenty of sense for New England.

With Cannon and Wynn both entering unrestricted free agency, McDermott very well could be the Patriots’ starting right tackle in 2023 unless the team adds a tackle via free agency or the NFL Draft.

Starting left tackle Trent Brown, offensive guards Michael Onwenu and Cole Strange and center David Andrews are all under contract for 2023.

  • XFL’s three-point conversion creates new late-game strategies

    XFL’s three-point conversion creates new late-game strategies

Whether either of the two minor football leagues playing this year will get fans to care remains to be seen. But with the latest edition of the XFL kicking off this weekend, some of the new rules make for some interesting strategic discussions.

One such discussion took place on the Houston Roughnecks’ sideline on Saturday night, while they had a 30-12 lead in the fourth quarter. In the NFL, that would be a three-possession lead, but in the XFL it was only a two-possession lead: The XFL has three-point conversions, where the offense snaps the ball at the 10-yard line and gets three points for running or passing it into the end zone, so a team trailing by 18 could tie the game with two touchdowns and two three-point conversions.

Roughnecks coach Wade Phillips was cognizant of that with his team in field goal range, and he decided to kick a field goal to make it a three-possession game.

“We’re 18 points ahead. We go to 21, they’ve got to score three times,” said Phillips, on the XFL broadcast where coaches where microphones and their comments are aired live.

Houston made the field goal and won 33-12.

  • Kyle Shanahan not to blame for 49ers’ Brock Purdy injury, Greg Cosell says

Kyle Shanahan not to blame for 49ers’ Brock Purdy injury, Greg Cosell says

Cosell explains why Shanahan not to blame for Purdy injury originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

After Brock Purdy suffered a devastating injury during the NFC Championship Game, some pointed the finger at 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan for calling the play that got his rookie quarterback hurt.

And while NFL Films producer Greg Cosell understands that’s an easy thing to do, he stopped by Super Bowl LVII’s Radio Row in Phoenix last week and shared why Shanahan’s choice wasn’t “stupid.”

“That was a shot play, and every team has tight ends block pass rushers. That’s not uncommon,” Cosell told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco and Jennifer Lee Chan for the latest episode of “49ers Talk.” “Now, because the result of that play was obviously not only negative in terms of a sack or whatever it was, but a potential loss of a season for Brock Purdy … That’s easy to rip.”

Purdy sustained a torn right UCL when Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick tore past 49ers backup tight end Tyler Kroft to sack the quarterback. The 23-year-old dropped back and was in the process of firing a deep pass off play-action, but Reddick hit his elbow and stripped him of the ball before he could do so.

Purdy will undergo surgery to repair his torn ligament on Feb. 22, and he was one of four San Francisco quarterbacks to exit a game with injury during the 2022 NFL regular season and playoffs.

“Can you sit here and say, as an abstraction, that you don’t want Tyler Kroft blocking Haason Reddick?” Cosell said. “Yes, of course you can, and I get that and that’s fine.

“But Shanahan’s not the only guy that’s done that. I’ve seen it on tape every week, and it works. And I’m being honest, I don’t know what else to say about it. It didn’t work [for the 49ers], so it looks really bad. But it’s not because Kyle Shanahan is stupid.”

Purdy’s teammates also defended Shanahan in the week after the NFC title game, with George Kittle defending Kroft’s ability to block on the play.
