Miles Sanders apparently sees the writing on the proverbial wall. Despite a successful run that included his role in last year’s NFC title, the veteran running back feels that he will join the list of Eagles players who will play elsewhere in 2023.

Sanders bid adieu to Philadelphia on Tuesday shortly after it was reported that the Eagles agreed to terms with former Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny.

The 53rd overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Sanders blossomed into a Pro Bowl player during his time with the Eagles. He was named to his first Pro Bowl last season after setting career highs with 1,269 rushing yards and 11 touchdown runs. Sanders ran for an additional 148 yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles’ three playoff games.

Sanders’ versatility is one of the things that should attract teams to him in free agency. After catching 50 passes as…

  • Miami’s Mario Cristobal sets tone for spring practice, pivotal Year 2 after coaching staff shakeup

Miami’s Mario Cristobal sets tone for spring practice, pivotal Year 2 after coaching staff shakeup

Spring practice is underway at Miami, where Mario Cristobal has a second chance at a first impression as the leader of a program where he once played and still cares for deeply. The 2023 season in Coral Gables is arguably the most pivotal of any Year 2 campaign in college football; coaching staff changes bring the expectation that last year’s results — a wildly disappointing 5-7 record — will not be replicated.

Miami will have a new offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and four new position coaches, bringing changes in philosophy and signaling that the results of 2022 will not be acceptable. There is some familiarity among the new, like Miami Dolphins legend Jason Taylor moving from an analyst role to defensive line or Tim Harris Jr. returning to his alma mater as running backs coach. Overall, however, Miami is preparing for the fall it’s like another crack at Year 1 of the Cristobal era.

There are a myriad of reasons for the changes, and not all of them are tied to last year’s results. While former offensive coordinator Josh Gattis was dismissed, former defensive coordinator Kevin Steele was hired away by Nick Saban at Alabama. The ensuing dominoes saw quarterbacks coach Frank Ponce, co-defensive coordinator Charlie Strong, running backs coach Kevin Smith and defensive ends coach Rodrique Wright seek opportunities elsewhere. The winds of change have been blowing all around Cristobal and this program, and now here in spring practice it’s time to get settled and chart the course for 2023.

    Offseason changes

New offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson brings with him an Air Raid system that aims to use the pass concepts to open up the run game. Dawson has told reporters that while he acknowledges the Air Raid label, his offense and its…

  • Vikings have had extension talks with Kirk Cousins, nothing is imminent

Vikings have had extension talks with Kirk Cousins, nothing is imminent

During a press conference at the Scouting Combine, Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was asked about the possibility of signing quarterback Kirk Cousins to an extension this offseason.

Adofo-Mensah said that the team didn’t want to be throwing darts at the quarterback position and that the team is “always trying to be solutions-oriented and find a way that works for both people” while acknowledging that the two sides may not have the same view of what another contract would look like.

It appears that remains the case. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that there have been extension talks this offseason, but that no deal is imminent as the start of the new league year draws closer.

Cousins has $15 million of a $20 million roster bonus due this week and he’s set to count $36.25 million against the cap in 2023. An extension would cut that number down, but it looks like he may be on his way to playing out this year on an expiring deal.

  • Colorado set to host four-star RB Stacy Gage during spring football game

Colorado set to host four-star RB Stacy Gage during spring football game

One of the more exciting running backs in the class of 2024 is scheduled to be in Boulder for Colorado’s spring football game on April 22, per multiple reports.

After including the Buffs in his top eight in January, Florida blue-chip RB Stacy Gage has a visit scheduled during what’s shaping up to be a huge weekend for CU recruiting.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Gage is ranked No. 163 overall nationally and No. 10 at RB following a strong junior season. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound prospect recorded over 800 offensive yards with 14 touchdowns in the fall for St. Thomas Aquinas High School, which produced current CU running back Anthony Hankerson.

Gage told BuffStampede’s Adam Munsterteiger (subscription required) that his relationship with head coach Deion Sanders and running backs coach Gary Harrell has made Colorado an attractive destination.

  • Agent’s Take: Target prices for Jessie Bates III, other intriguing defensive players with expiring contracts

Agent’s Take: Target prices for Jessie Bates III, other intriguing defensive players with expiring contracts

Target prices for 10 offensive players with expiring contracts were covered in an article earlier in the week. The focus now turns to the other side of the ball.

Things will get moving March 13 when the exclusive negotiating rights NFL teams have had with their impending free agents ends. The agents of prospective unrestricted free agents are allowed to negotiate with teams beginning at 12 p.m. ET on March 13 until 3:59:59 p.m. ET on March 15. Prospective UFAs who don’t have an agent can also negotiate with front office executives of teams. Players can’t sign deals with new clubs until the 2023 league year and free agency officially begin at 4 p.m. ET. A player’s ability to re-sign with his current club is allowed during the period.

As a reminder, it was my responsibility while working on the agent side to create target or asking prices for the firm’s clients headed toward free agency regardless of whether I was the lead agent. In that spirit, I have set target prices with total contract value, overall guarantees, amount fully guaranteed at signing and first three years compensation (when applicable) for 10 intriguing defensive players who will be unrestricted free agents or were designated as a franchise players.

Players don’t necessarily sign for their target prices because free agency is a fluid process where adaptations must be made to changing market conditions. Some players are disappointed in free agency’s outcome because their market never develops for a variety of reasons (age, unrealistic contract demands, supply and demand at a playing position, etc.).

Remember the target or asking prices for these players may be on the high side and aren’t necessarily what their actual deals will be.

  • Alabama’s Nick Saban prefers ‘NFL model’ despite its own issues: NIL ‘not what it was supposed to be’

Alabama’s Nick Saban prefers ‘NFL model’ despite its own issues: NIL ‘not what it was supposed to be’

When it comes to player compensation, Alabama coach Nick Saban would much rather see an NFL model in college football than the current name, image and likeness (NIL) landscape. A vocal and visible critic of certain elements of the NIL landscape, Saban recently offered more in-depth thoughts during his discussion with Stephen A. Smith during his “Know Mercy” podcast this week

“If we want to change the model of college football and follow the NFL model, what I would like to see — if that’s the case — is that we pay the players — everybody’s got a part of their scholarship that gives them so much money,” he said. “But now you’re talking about making college student-athletes employees, and that in and of itself may have some issues that would have to be resolved. So you’re talking about a similar model to the NFL where you’ve got to get some sort of legal right to be able to do this.

Saban’s critiques of NIL echo his controversial comments last year when he publicly accused Texas A&M and coach Jimbo Fisher of “buying” their 2022 recruiting class, which finished ahead of Alabama as the top-ranked class in the star system era. Those comments sparked intense backlash from Fisher and prompted Saban to offer an apology. Nevertheless, it remains apparent that Saban, 71, is disenchanted with flaws in the disorganized NIL structure.

“[Name, Image and Likeness] wasn’t supposed to be me going to give a speech to raise money from alumni so we can get enough money in our collective so can pay players,” Saban said. “That’s not what it was supposed to be.”

    Though Saban may not love…

  • Eagles updated roster ahead of NFL free agency

Eagles updated roster ahead of NFL free agency

With Howie Roseman choosing not to use the franchise tag, the Eagles are going to look a lot different when the team reconvenes at the NovaCare Complex for the 2023 off-season program.

Philadelphia has 18 pending free agents and 9 key contributors on defense that could move on for heftier paydays when the new league year starts on March 15.

Making matters even more urgent, the franchise will work to sign All-Pro quarterback Jalen Hurt to a hefty contract extension, ensuring that multiple free agents are unlikely to return.

  • Michigan State football loses commitment from 2024 WR Nick Marsh

Michigan State football loses commitment from 2024 WR Nick Marsh

Michigan State football had picked up a very early commitment from 2024 4-star wide receiver Nick Marsh, so it’s not a huge surprise when, on Tuesday, he announced that he will be rescinding that commitment to think it over.

While this might seem like bad news, it’s become part of the process of these long-term recruiting processes and a fact of life in college recruiting these days.
