Georgia wide receiver Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint was arrested Tuesday on reckless driving and speeding charges. He was booked by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and posted bond less than one hour later, according to The Athletic.

Rosemy-Jacksaint is the fourth Bulldogs player to be arrested on a driving-related charge this offseason and fifth since the start of the 2022 season.

Defensive tackle Jalen Carter was arrested March 1 ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft Combine and charged with reckless driving and street racing. The charges stemmed from a January incident involving team staffer Chandler LeCroy, who crashed her vehicle and died in the alleged street race, as did Bulldogs offensive lineman Devin Willock.

Carter pled no contest to charges and was given 12 months probation, a $1,000 fine, 80 hours of community service and was required to complete a stand-mandated defensive driving course.

Willock’s father filed a $40 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Georgia Athletic Association related to the deadly crash. The lawsuit alleges Carter had a “pattern of excessive speeding” as the player was previously previously cited for driving nearly 90 mph in a 45 mph zone on an Atlanta highway.

Linebacker Jason Dumas-Johnson was arrested for racing and reckless driving just five days before the incident that killed Willock, and wide receiver De’Nylon Morrissette was arrested on multiple driving-related charges, including a DUI, earlier this month.

  • NFL owners decision to flex ‘Thursday Night Football’ will have negative impact on fans

NFL owners decision to flex ‘Thursday Night Football’ will have negative impact on fans

EAGAN, Minn. — The NFL finally forced Thursday night flex scheduling into its broadcast window. Let’s hope the league never has to use it.

On Monday, 24 owners voted in favor of a scheduling mechanism by which the league will be able to flex into (or out of) “Thursday Night Football” games. The games are limited only to Weeks 13-17, the decision must be made no later than 28 days in advance of the game, there’s a maximum of two Thursday night games that can be flexed out of the five options and, of course, the game has to warrant being flexed out of.

It’s a heavy set of conditions that set a high bar for this ever coming to fruition. And the league makes the tacit admission that it could be a bad idea by noting this is a “one-season trial of modified scheduling policies for flexible scheduling in connection with the Thursday Night Football package.”

The league badly wanted this to pass during the annual meetings in March in Arizona. Then, the league had to give teams 15 days’ notice instead of 28. I’m told the room was fairly evenly split on the resolution before Giants co-owner John Mara stood up and called the idea “abusive.”

He is, of course, correct. I’ve yet to speak to one NFL player who will publicly or privately say they like playing football on a Thursday night. The NFLPA certainly isn’t in favor of this.

But beyond that, the NFL encouraged fans to buy tickets as soon as its heavily produced schedule release took place a few weeks ago. Fans make their plans well in advance, and a primetime game late in the season is one a fan of the home or away side will want to lock in.

Travel costs money. Airfare is expensive. The cost of a hotel room spikes when the city is hosting an NFL game. To tell fans of either of the teams playing in the five contests who could be impacted that their plans may be worth nothing in a few months seems to go against the Football Is Family ideal the…

  • Sean Payton feels ‘really good’ about Broncos’ running back room

Sean Payton feels ‘really good’ about Broncos’ running back room

The Denver Broncos are set to go into the 2023 season with four holdover running backs from last year and four new arrivals. By the time the 53-man roster is set, the new arrivals will likely outnumber the holders.

The Broncos signed Samaje Perine during free agency and he will serve as a fill-in starter if Javonte Williams (knee) is not fully recovered by Week 1. Denver also signed Tony Jones, a former New Orleans Saints backup who might be the early favorite for RB3 duties this season.

“I feel really good about our group of veterans that are here in the building,” coach Sean Payton said on May 13. “When we signed Samaje, this is a guy that gave us flexibility. We know that he can play and be an every-down back. Our current starter [Javonte Williams] is doing extremely well. I would tell you that we expect him to be ready for the start of training camp and that’s good news.”

In addition to Williams, Perine and Jones, the Broncos also have veteran Jacques Patrick, holdovers Damarea Crockett, Tyreik McAllister and
Tyler Badie, plus undrafted free agent signee Jaleel McLaughlin.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Denver carry four running backs on the initial 53-man roster, and the team will likely carry two more on the practice squad. Right now, Payton is pleased with how the depth chart stacks up.

  • USC AD Mike Bohn suddenly resigns, effective immediately, after four years leading Trojans

USC AD Mike Bohn suddenly resigns, effective immediately, after four years leading Trojans

USC athletic director Mike Bohn suddenly resigned from his position Friday, effectively immediately. Bohn over the last four years has helped lead a turnaround for the Trojans, hiring head football coach Lincoln Riley and negotiating the program’s move from the Pac-12 to Big Ten beginning July 1, 2024.

Though Bohn cited health concerns as part of his departure, four former or current USC employees recently raised concerns about Bohn’s management during a recent top-to-bottom review of the athletic department conducted by an external firm, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Trojans retained Gina Maistro Smith, a Philadelphia-based attorney from Cozen O’Connor, to conduct that review.

“In our singular pursuit of excellence, I am committed to ensuring we have the right leadership in place to achieve our goals,” said USC president Carol L. Folt in a Friday statement. As part of that commitment and as we prepare to move to the Big Ten, we conducted a thorough review of the athletics department, including its operations, culture, and strategy. Having built a strong foundation over the last few years, now is the time for new direction grounded in our values and in expertise needed to fulfill our aspirational vision for Trojan athletics.”

Bohn leaves the USC job after previously departing from the same role at Cincinnati to take the job out West. His ability to poach Riley, the highly regarded Oklahoma coach, allowed him to put his stamp on the athletic department. He also played a significant role in USC and nearby rival UCLA departing the Pac-12 for the Big Ten, a move that will come to fruition in about 13 months.

“In moving on, it is important now that I focus on being present with my treasured family, addressing ongoing health…

  • Ex-49ers player Bruce Miller reported to Capitol Police after allegedly threatening congressman with execution

Ex-49ers player Bruce Miller reported to Capitol Police after allegedly threatening congressman with execution

    Getty Images

Former 49ers fullback Bruce Miller has been reported to Capitol Police after allegedly sending a threatening message to Eric Swalwell on social media.

The California congressman shared the contents of the message on Wednesday.

“Almost time!!!. Would you rather Guantanamo or just execution f—- traitor,” the message said.

The threat came in a direct message, which was sent to Swalwell from Miller’s personal Twitter account. The message was threatening enough that Swalwell reported the matter to Capitol Police, according to NBC Bay Area.

“My family and staff are deeply disturbed by the threat of execution … apparently by former 49er Bruce Miller,” Swalwell told NBC. “Threats of political violence are unacceptable.”

The 49ers actually reached out to Swalwell on Thursday, although the congressman didn’t offer any details on what was said. Swalwell has been a member of the House of Representatives since November 2012 when he was first elected. His district in California includes the Bay Area, which is where Miller spent nearly five years of his life as a member of the 49ers.

Miller sent out a tweet on Thursday where he attempted to downplay the nature of his message to Swalwell.

“I was content with trolling corrupt politicians in my DM’s, but since you want to make a story out of it then that’s what we’ll do,” Miller wrote. “That was in no way a threat to you or you family.”

The former NFL fullback, who was a seventh-round pick in 2011, spent five full seasons with the 49ers, but got released just before the start of his sixth season in 2016. The team dumped Miller just days after he was charged with seven felonies after he allegedly assaulted a 70-year-old man….

  • 100 days until Notre Dame-Ohio State

100 days until Notre Dame-Ohio State

Today is the last day that you’ll have woken up and there will be triple digits days left until college football fully returns.   Week Zero is highlighted by Notre Dame and Navy in Dublin, Ireland this year and it’s now just 100 days away.

We’ll be counting down the days until kickoff all summer long sometimes various and entirely random number connections throughout.

In honor of it being 100 days we thought a good way to mark the occasion would be to look back at Lou Holtz’s time at Notre Dame.

Why?  Well he did have 100 career wins as Notre Dame’s head football coach which trailed only Knute Rockne when he left the program following the 1996 season.

Holtz of course guided Notre Dame to the 1988 national championship and hopefully before too much longer he’ll not be the last coach to lead the Irish to a title.  We all know about the title but here are a handful of other notes from Holtz’s time at Notre Dame to look back on as we countdown the days to the season opener.

    Best 5-6 team ever?

    Jonathan Daniel /Allsport

Lou Holtz’s first game as Notre Dame’s head coach was a thriller at Notre Dame Stadium in which the Irish gave No. 3 Michigan everything they wanted and more in a 24-23 Wolverines victory.  Notre Dame would finish just 5-6 that year but five of those losses were by a combined 14 points.  A season ending upset at USC after trailing by three possessions helped set the tone for a return to prominence a year later.

1987 Turnaround and Tim Brown’s Heisman

    Malcolm Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Thanks to the electric Tim Brown, Notre Dame started the 1987 season with a bang by winning at Michigan and starting the year 8-1.  Brown ran away with the Heisman Trophy but the Irish faded down the stretch dropping their final two regular season games at Penn State and Miami before falling to Texas A&M in the…

  • Colts sign WR Josh Downs to rookie contract

Colts sign WR Josh Downs to rookie contract

The Indianapolis Colts signed wide receiver Josh Downs to his rookie contract, the team announced Tuesday.

Downs, who was selected in the third round, is the first of the team’s Day 1 or Day 2 picks to sign his four-year rookie deal. It is worth roughly $5.59 million and includes a $1.1 million signing bonus.

Downs figures to compete immediately for a starting role in the wide receiver room, working mostly out of the slot. He’s a crafty route runner and quick separator from the slot while boasting some of the most reliable hands in the class.

Over the last two seasons at North Carolina, Downs was one of the most productive receivers in the nation. In 2021, he had a breakout as a true sophomore, which included 101 receptions for 1,335 yards and eight touchdowns.

He followed that up with another productive campaign in 2022, recording 94 receptions for 1,029 yards and 11 touchdowns.

With Downs under contract, the Colts have now signed eight of their 12 draft picks to rookie deals. They are still waiting on quarterback Anthony Richardson, second-round cornerback Julius Brents, fourth-round offensive tackle Blake Freeland and fourth-round defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore.
