Aaron Rodgers advocates for psychedelics legalization, normalization at conference in Denver

New York Jets quarterback and four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers spoke at a psychedelic science conference in Denver, Colo. on Wednesday, advocating for the legalization and normalization of such substances. Rodgers was among the notable speakers at the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies’ annual conference, a group which also included former Texas governor Rick Perry as well as musician and actor Jaden Smith.

After initially using psilocybin, a hallucinogenic found in certain mushrooms, Rodgers spoke extensively about his experience using ayahuasca, a psychedelic tea that he began to take in 2020 before winning two consecutive MVP awards. Rodgers claimed that “hundreds” of fellow NFL players have asked him about psychedelics, and that he has also used ayahuasca to bond with teammates in communal settings.

“When I first did ‘aya’ in 2020, I remember thinking afterwards, like, I’m going to have to talk about this at some point,” Rodgers said, per the New York Post. “Are people ready? How will it be received? Then I won MVP. Then I did it again. I said OK, I can probably talk about it now. But the cool thing has been the response. Not from the media that calls me a druggie, a hippie or whatever it was.

“To see basketball players and baseball players and surfers and entertainers and my own teammates and colleagues across the league reach out, and either share their story about their own medicine journey or ask to be a part of an upcoming one, is pretty special.”

Rodgers’ comments were made in a nearly hour-long discussion with podcaster Aubrey Marcus, which also included Rodgers pledging his support in the movement to secure acceptance and legal approval for the use of psychedelics in therapy. The conference in Denver took place only a few short months after Colorado residents voted to decriminalize the use of psychedelic mushrooms.

  • Deion Sanders to undergo emergency surgery for blood clots in legs, unlikely to have foot amputated

Deion Sanders to undergo emergency surgery for blood clots in legs, unlikely to have foot amputated

    Getty Images

Deion Sanders will undergo emergency surgery to treat two blood clots in his legs — one in his right and one in his left — he announced in a video Thursday. The procedure, scheduled for Friday, comes amid ongoing blood flow issues that have plagued Sanders dating back to his days at Jackson State.

“Now this is what happened. I went to the doctors the other day to check myself out and I have two clots in my leg. One in my right leg, one in my left leg in my thigh,” Sanders said. “Now I have a procedure tomorrow to try and get those clots so I can have proper blood flow through the leg so I can fix the toes.”

News of the impending surgery first surfaced from Adam “Pacman” Jones, who updated Sanders’ condition during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

Sanders additionally said it is unlikely he’ll have to amputate his left foot due to the same blood clot issues, which was the topic in a recent episode of “The Pregame Show,” a YouTube channel documenting the Buffaloes football program. In the episode, it was revealed Sanders could lose his left foot if he were to undergo another surgery. University of Colorado vascular surgeons Dr. Donald Jacobs and Dr. Max Wohlauer told Sanders that in that clip if the current pain in a dislocated toe isn’t dealt with soon it could lead to a more serious condition that will result in the amputation.

“There’s no talk of amputation or any of that whatsoever,” Sanders said in his most recent video. “The doctors were just telling me worst comes to…

  • Chiefs’ Kadarius Toney plans to troll Giants with Super Bowl ring by wearing bling on his middle finger

Chiefs’ Kadarius Toney plans to troll Giants with Super Bowl ring by wearing bling on his middle finger

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver and Super Bowl champion Kadarius Toney has some new bling and is using it to troll other fan bases. The ring the team earned by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII was unveiled last week and it is a rather impressive piece of jewelry.

The ring is the ultimate flex. The symbolism of being world champs is great enough, and the 629 diamonds they put on each piece only makes it more of a statement.

For Toney, the ring is not just a way to celebrate the 2023 season, it is also a way to dunk on his former team, the New York Giants.

Toney was seen on video with a visual explanation of where he plans to wear his Super Bowl ring. He said the ring will be going on his middle finger, flipping the bird and saying it was a message for the Giants and their fans.

“I got the Super Bowl ring coming through this finger right here,” Toney said holding up his middle finger. “For everybody in New York right here. Aye this for everybody in New York right here. It’s gonna be right here though.”

He was laughing and joking, but also … may be slightly serious.

“Y’all be tuned in. I might be viral somewhere,” after being asked when he would get his ring. “Imma go in the middle of New York with that middle finger up.”

He explained that the jokes goes both ways.

“Hey look, I love trolling. They be trying to troll me. I got something for them,” Toney said.

Toney did not have the best relationship with the Giants, if that was not immediately clear by him giving them the middle finger in the video.

He began his career in New York as a first-round pick in 2021, taken by the Giants at No. 20 overall. He played in 10 games for New York in 2021, starting four. He finished his rookie season with 39 receptions for 420 yards. Toney played in just two games with one start for the Giants in 2022. Injuries impacted his time with the team and they were quick…

  • USC football regular-season history vs Ohio State: 1949

USC football regular-season history vs Ohio State: 1949

The USC Trojans and Ohio State Buckeyes met multiple times in the 1940s. Ohio State won the national title in 1942. USC made four Rose Bowls from 1943 through 1947. At the end of the decade, Ohio State produced a Rose Bowl season, but the Buckeyes couldn’t defeat a USC team which labored through a difficult season.

Ohio State might have finished No. 6 in the polls at the conclusion of the 1949 college football season, but USC stood its ground against that particular iteration of the Buckeyes. OSU and USC tied in the 1949 game in Los Angeles, 13-13.

The Trojans finished with a 5-3-1 record and Ohio State ended up at 7-1-2 with a Rose Bowl victory. This was the only season in Wesley Fesler’s eight-year coaching career (four years at Ohio State, three at Minnesota, one at Pittsburgh) in which he made and won a bowl game. Fesler was the Ohio State coach who immediately preceded Woody Hayes.

USC coach Jeff Cravath was excellent during the World War II era and immediately thereafter, but following the 1947 season, his Trojan tenure ran out of steam. The 1949 campaign would be his last winning season. He endured a sub-.500 record in 1950 and would be replaced by Jess Hill before the 1951 season.

  • Amon-Ra St. Brown hopes to become more of a deep threat in 2023

Amon-Ra St. Brown hopes to become more of a deep threat in 2023

Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown quietly has become one of the best young receivers in the NFL. He intends to get even better.

As explained by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, St. Brown intends to become more a deep threat in 2023.

Receivers coach Antwaan Randle El believes it can happen.

“He can get in and out of cuts so easily, like he doesn’t have to give all that extra stuff cause he can just get out of it so fast,” Randle El said recently, via Birkett. “So I just want [him] to just run that smooth route. Like, you don’t have to give any extra at the top of it, just, pop-pop, come on out of it and he’s been doing it in OTAs so that’s been a growth for him. So no extra movement, just get in the route, come out of it because he gets in the route so fast.”

Fast is the key word, if St. Brown wants to stretch the field. He has a career average of 10.6 yards per catch, a number that went up last year largely due to what he did after getting the ball. Becoming a deep threat is all about what happens before the player gets the ball. It’s about having the ability to get free at the line of the scrimmage and run past the corner, forcing help over the top and, in turn, opening up the rest of the offense.

St. Brown has already overachieved in three NFL seasons. But a 40-yard dash time of 4.61 seconds doesn’t scream out that he’s destined to become the deep threat he aspires to be.

Still, what he lacks in raw speed he can make up for with the kind of polish in his route-running and raw determination to get the ball once it’s in the air.

Anyone who has bet against St. Brown through two seasons has lost. It probably would be wise to not bet against him again.

  • 2023 SEC win totals, odds, picks: Predictions as Georgia eyes perfection, LSU takes the next step

2023 SEC win totals, odds, picks: Predictions as Georgia eyes perfection, LSU takes the next step

With Texas and Oklahoma set to enter the SEC in 2024, divisions will soon be eliminated and the conference landscape we’ve known since 1992 will go the way of the dinosaurs. Traditionalists have one more season savor the old ways before things get nuts.

Both the LSU and Tennessee secured victories over Alabama a year ago, but now the Crimson Tide will have a shot at revenge with the Tigers and Volunteers set to make trips to Tuscaloosa.

Two-time national champion Georgia will look to continue its dominance after running the table and flattening TCU in the College Football Playoff National Championship in January. Coach Kirby Smart will be breaking in a new quarterback after Stetson Bennett IV guided the team to back-to-back national titles.

What do the oddsmakers think of the 2023 SEC season? Let’s break down the Caesars Sportsbook win total projections and make game-by-game predictions (subject to many, many changes).

    Alabama

    Over/under 10.5 wins

Wins: Middle Tennessee, at South Florida, Ole Miss, at Mississippi State, at Texas A&M, Arkansas, Tennessee, at Kentucky, Chattanooga, at AuburnLosses: Texas, LSU

The Crimson Tide have a ton of questions (by Alabama standards) heading into the season, starting at quarterback where they picked up former Notre Dame signal-caller Tyler Buchner to compete with Ty Simpson and Jalen Milroe. That’s a big problem considering they’ll host Texas and star Quinn Ewers — who torched the Tide in last season’s matchup before leaving the game with injury — in Week 2. LSU is going to be tough as well considering the stability on the roster after last season’s run to the division title. The saving grace for coach Nick Saban is that the road schedule is a piece of cake save for the always-wild trip to…

  • Here’s why Dalvin Cook could wait until late summer to join a new team, and which star he wants to play with

Here’s why Dalvin Cook could wait until late summer to join a new team, and which star he wants to play with

    USATSI

Dalvin Cook’s release from the Vikings this offseason had to do with money. Ever since the Pro Bowl running back hit the open market, he’s reportedly been set on landing something in the ballpark of $10 million per season. Now there’s reason to believe Cook will wait another month — and perhaps all the way into late summer — to finalize his next team.

Echoing previous reporting from the Miami Herald about Cook being “willing to wait a while” for what he deems an appropriate offer, ESPN said Monday that July 17 “could be a factor” in Cook’s plans to hold out for a bigger deal.

That is the deadline for players under the franchise tag to reach long-term contracts with their respective teams. And with three big-name backs — Josh Jacobs (Raiders), Saquon Barkley (Giants) and Tony Pollard (Cowboys) — currently tagged, Cook should have three different contract benchmarks from which to negotiate.

It’s possible several or all of those RBs could remain unsigned beyond July 17, however, if they don’t strike a long-term deal and then wait or refuse to sign their $10M tags. That could leave Cook without an updated look at the RB market until closer to the start of the 2023 season. Jacobs and Barkley have already hinted at skipping games in an effort to secure longer-term security.

In any event, it’s a safe bet Cook will take his time exploring opportunities — and waiting for a better one to emerge. And it’s no surprise, then, he told ESPN this week he’d embrace a team-up with fellow free agent DeAndre Hopkins. The latter has visited the Patriots and Titans since his release from the Cardinals, which was also prompted by contractual issues. But “training…
