  • Seahawks reach injury settlements with two safeties

Seahawks reach injury settlements with two safeties

The NFL can be a cutthroat business, especially when it comes to injury. With limited roster space, injured players on the roster bubble often find themselves looking for new NFL homes. Such is the case for a pair of safeties from the Seattle Seahawks: Joey Blount and undrafted free agent Jonathan Sutherland.

The safety room was crowded in Seattle with players like Quandre Diggs, Julian Love, and the return of Jamal Adams. With the cutting down to the final 53-man roster, the Seahawks moved on from Blount and Sutherland.

Blount played in 11 games for the Seahawks last season, but he did not make much of an impact. In those 11 games the only statistic Blount recorded was one fumble recovery. However, NFL teams are always looking for depth, so I’m sure Blount will land on his feet somewhere else in the league.

Stanford vs. Hawaii prediction, live stream online, odds, channel, how to watch on CBS Sports Network

Last Saturday’s Week 0 games served as a fun undercard for the start of the 2023 college football season, but now the main event — Week 1 — has finally arrived. This week’s schedule kicked off Thursday with 11 games involving at least one team from the Football Bowl Subdivision.

After Thursday’s game between NC State and Uconn, the action on CBS Sports Network continued Friday night when Stanford made the 2,400-mile trek to Hawaii in coach Troy Taylor’s debut with the Cardinal.

The game marked just the fourth time the schools have met and the first since 1972, with Stanford owning a perfect 3-0 mark in past matchups.

CBS Sports Network’s Week 1 coverage rolls on with four games on the Saturday slate. It all begins with Liberty taking on Bowling Green for the start of the Jamey Chadwell era. Western Kentucky then hosts South Florida, followed by Washington State playing at Colorado State. Coverage concludes with San Diego State looking to improve to 2-0 on the season when the Aztecs host Idaho State.

Here’s a deeper look at the action that will air on CBS Sports Network in the coming days.

  • Odell Beckham Jr. supports Giants rookie Jalin Hyatt wearing his old No. 13 in New York

Odell Beckham Jr. supports Giants rookie Jalin Hyatt wearing his old No. 13 in New York

After wearing No. 84 during the preseason, Jalin Hyatt was looking for a new number as enters his first NFL regular season. Hyatt’s number in college (11) was retired by the team in honor of Phil Simms, so Hyatt chose the No. 13, which was the same number Odell Beckham Jr. donned during his notable tenure with New York.

“There’s no story behind it,” Hyatt said of wearing Beckham’s old number, via the team’s website. “I just want to start my own legacy with it and do my best for the Giants in number 13.”

Things tend to become a story, however, when it involves Beckham, who has been one of the NFL’s most well-known players since his one-handed catch against the Cowboys in 2014. Beckham gave the story legs when he took to X to publicly support Hyatt’s decision to rock 13 for Big Blue.

“I was surprised he knew who I was,” Hyatt said of Beckham, who met Hyatt’s acquaintance during training sessions in Arizona this past offseason. “It shows a lot of love that he has for the Giants. A lot of respect for him.

“What he did here – had a great career with the Giants and kind of took over. I was a fan when I was young watching him. High school, college, and now being here, but just with the jersey number, it’s just one of those things I wanted to start my own legacy. I like low numbers, and if I had to choose a number it’d be 11, but it’s retired here, so can’t go with that one, so 13 would be the next option.”

  • Favorite late-round dart throws after pick 150

Favorite late-round dart throws after pick 150

The late rounds of fantasy drafts are when some managers take their eyes off the ball. Another helping of tacos might get in the way of looking at a third wide receiver for the bench. One more cocktail may get a competitor to think more of a kicker than a rookie who could pop in the latter part of the season.

Trevor Lawrence went at pick No. 150 in 2022. He was coming off a horrendous rookie season. The golden-haired boy got a new head coach in Doug Pederson and passed for 4,113 yards and 25 touchdowns to finish as the QB8.

Christian Watson had an ADP of 174, then delivered an otherworldly four-game stretch with seven touchdowns in four games. Daniel Jones was the epitome of the late-round quarterback, with an ADP of 202. He finished the QB9.

Quality is there for the taking late in drafts, which is why I’m here to deliver some of my favorite late-round picks you can take a look at now so you can remember them when those tacos are calling your name late in the draft.

These players have a Yahoo ECR of 150 or higher and are broken up by their position groups. In parenthesis is their ranking.

    Quarterbacks

    Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh Steelers (165)

The Year Two leap for a quarterback has been something to watch since Dan Marino blew away the league for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns in his sophomore season in 1984; probably even before then. Pickett has been the darling of the fantasy community this preseason, completing 13 of 15 passes for 199 yards and 2 touchdowns. This pass to George Pickens has fantasy managers three levels beyond excitement:

Pickett has two top receivers in Diontae Johnson, who has drawn 460 targets in the past three seasons, and Pickens, another sophomore who is looking toward a leap of his own. Pat Freiermuth saw 98 targets, good for second on the team, and he’s been the target of many fantasy managers looking to wait at tight end in drafts.

Pickett also has Konami Code rushing ability, leaving the pocket 55 times for 237 yards and three touchdowns last…

  • Penn State starting the year with a win vs. West Virginia?

Penn State starting the year with a win vs. West Virginia?

The start of a new season is finally upon us, and our staff at Nittany Lions Wirew could not be happier to see the return of Penn State football. Each week throughout the season we will be sharing our quick thoughts and predictions for the game of the week, starting with Penn State’s season opener against West Virginia.

Penn State will host the Mountaineers in the first meeting between the two former regional rivals since 1992. The all-time series results weigh heavily in Penn State’s favor over the years and the Nittany Lions are a big favorite at home to start the 2023 season.

Penn State’s primetime season opener will air on NBC as the first official primetime game on the Big Ten’s new media rights deal with the network. NBC could not have asked for a better setting to kickstart their Big Ten partnership as Beaver Stadium will be electric with the helmet stripe game, or as James Franklin called it a mini whiteout. Either way, the crowd will be energized for the start of what could be a fun year in Happy Valley, and having an old regional rival in town should rekindle some good memories for fans who remember the pre-Big Ten era fondly.

Here is how we see the game playing out this weekend. In short, Penn State should be in good shape.

    Brad Wakai, Contributor

Saturday should be an interesting opener for Penn State facing a hungry West Virginia team that is thinking upset. However, there is too much talent on the Nittany Lions roster and they eventually run away from the Mountaineers using their running game and defense

Final score: Penn State 35, West Virginia 14

    Kevin McGuire, Editor

The recipe for a season-opening win in primetime is pretty simple. Let the defense cook and let the running game take care of business on offense. Penn State simply has too much talent in those areas to allow for this game to be a…

  • Patriots sign former Eagles, Vikings wide receiver Jalen Reagor to practice squad ahead of Week 1, per report

Patriots sign former Eagles, Vikings wide receiver Jalen Reagor to practice squad ahead of Week 1, per report

    Getty Images

Matt Corral isn’t the only notable name to join the Patriots after cutdown day. Hours after claiming the former Panthers quarterback off waivers, New England has also signed former Eagles and Vikings wide receiver Jalen Reagor to its practice squad, per ESPN.

Reagor’s arrival coincides with the Patriots placing 2022 second-rounder Tyquan Thornton on injured reserve, guaranteeing the latter will miss at least four games while recovering from a shoulder issue. Thornton is primarily known for his deep speed, which has also been one of Reagor’s top attributes. Several of New England’s other receivers, including reserves Demario Douglas and Tre Nixon, are also battling injuries, thinning the depth chart behind JuJu Smith-Schuster, DeVante Parker and Kendrick Bourne.

The 24-year-old Reagor is three years removed from going No. 21 overall in the 2020 draft, when the Eagles infamously selected him one spot before Vikings star Justin Jefferson. Traded to Minnesota prior to last season, Reagor competed behind Jefferson this summer, drawing brief trade interest before his release as part of final roster cuts.

Now in New England, Reagor will have an immediate chance to play his original team, with the Patriots set to host the Eagles in Week 1. Teams can promote practice-squad players to the active roster as many as three times during the season.

Reagor flashed his big-play ability in a 2020 rookie season that saw him approach 400 yards for the Eagles. But he was also plagued by drops, averaging fewer than 10 yards per catch the following year. After his relocation to Minnesota in a swap of draft picks, Reagor appeared in 17 games for the Vikings,…

  • College football picks, schedule: Odds for top Week 1 games, predictions against the spread, Thursday

College football picks, schedule: Odds for top Week 1 games, predictions against the spread, Thursday

Week 0 provided a perfect chance to reintroduce ourselves to the warm college football waters, but now Week 1 gives fans a chance to take a full dive into the action as the 2023 season really gets going. Beginning Thursday and continuing through Labor Day, there is a near constant flow of games to enjoy. And with the arrival of any new year, comes the promise of drama and surprises.

Outside of Saturday’s wall-to-wall coverage, Thursday’s slate is the most comprehensive. In all, 11 games spanning coast to coast will feature a little bit of everything. The marquee matchups, however, will be a pair of 8 p.m. kickoffs featuring power conference programs.

One is a rematch of last season’s thrilling opener between Florida and Utah. After coming up just short against the Gators a year ago in The Swamp, the No. 14 Utes will be looking for revenge. The primary question mark is the availability of Utah quarterback Cameron Rising, who continues to recover from a knee injury he suffered in last January’s Rose Bowl.

At the same time, the Matt Rhule era begins at Nebraska in a Big Ten opener against Minnesota. The Cornhuskers are desperate for a return to glory, and Rhule’s track record as a program builder suggests a competitive game against the Golden Gophers is on deck.

Be sure to stick with CBS Sports throughout the evening for college football coverage from the opening kickoff onward. Let’s take a look at our expert picks for the best games on Thursday of Week 1.
