  • Ranking the top 10 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft class: Texans’ C.J. Stroud, Eagles’ Jalen Carter lead the way

Ranking the top 10 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft class: Texans’ C.J. Stroud, Eagles’ Jalen Carter lead the way

We’re four games into the 2023 NFL season, and while looking ahead is typically what I do this time of year, it’s instructive to also look at how the rookies, just a month into their professional careers, are doing.

(Regarding looking ahead: On Thursday’s “With the First Pick” podcast, that’s exactly what Rick Spielman and I did — we looked at those NFL teams off to such sluggish starts that they’ve positioned themselves for a run at Caleb Williams with the first-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. So if that’s your jam, check that out.)

Specifically, I’ll rank the top 10 picks from the 2023 NFL Draft class, a group that includes three quarterbacks, six offensive players and a player who went ninth overall but is playing like one of the best players in the league. I watched every NFL snap for all 10 players, and their ranking below reflects both how they’ve performed (obviously), but also takes positional value into account. Put another way: quarterbacks are important, so even if, say, a cornerback played out of his mind, say, on national television against the Giants, he might be ranked lower than perhaps you might expect.

But here’s the thing: nine of the 10 players on this list are off to good-to-great starts; only one has struggled (though he has improved each week), and that’s likely due to a foot injury he’s still recovering from. Basically: there’s a lot of reason for optimism if your team had a top-10 pick because those guys have been impressive thus far.

We’ll start at No. 10 and work our way to No. 1.

  • D.J. Moore has two catches, 78 yards, TD after opening series

D.J. Moore has two catches, 78 yards, TD after opening series

Chase Claypool isn’t playing, but D.J. Moore is, and the Commanders probably should consider covering him.

Moore caught two passes for 78 yards and a touchdown on the Bears’ first drive.

The Bears won the toss and elected to receive and six plays later, they were in the end zone celebrating.

On the first play from scrimmage, Justin Fields nearly connected with Darnell Mooney on a long pass. Two plays later, on third-and-nine, Fields found Moore running free. Moore went 58 yards before safety Darrick Forrest pushed him out of bounds at the Washington 16.

After a Khalil Herbert run for no yards and a loss of 4 yards on a sack by Montez Sweat, Fields found Moore wide open in the end for a 20-yard score. It was Moore’s third touchdown catch of the season.

Fields went 2-of-3 for 78 yards and the touchdown on the opening drive.

  • Alabama’s Nick Saban pays tribute to ‘legendary’ Dick Butkus: ‘Great player. Great person’

Alabama’s Nick Saban pays tribute to ‘legendary’ Dick Butkus: ‘Great player. Great person’

On Thursday’s edition of “Hey Coach & The Nick Saban Show,” the namesake Alabama coach provided a heartfelt message for legendary football player Dick Butkus after being informed the linebacker died on Thursday at 80 years old.

Butkus was the No. 3 overall draft pick for the Chicago Bears in the 1965 NFL Draft and is widely regarded as one of the greatest linebackers of all time. He was named first-team All-Pro five times and racked up 22 interceptions over the course of his professional career. He is a member of both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame following his three-year career for Illinois in 1962-64.

“Great player. Great person. He’s legendary,” Saban said of Butkus (via Mike Rodak of Alabama’s 247Sports site). “He was one of the guys that made the linebacker position kind of ‘the man,’ so to speak, that made the whole defense be what it is. Great competitive character, great toughness.”

Saban has rostered three Butkus Award winners at Alabama: Rolando McClain in 2009, C.J. Mosley in 2013 and Reuben Foster in 2016. The award is given to the most impactful linebacker in the game every year.

Saban was also complimentary of Butkus in that he sat down with each of McClain, Mosley and Foster when they won his namesake award:

“[He] Sat down with every player and gave them the [Butkus] Award and spoke with them, spent time with them,” Saban said. “I thought that was fantastic.”

Butkus played out his collegiate career at Illinois, winning the Chicago Tribune Silver Football as the Big Ten’s Most Valuable Player and the American Football Coaches Association Player of the Year in 1964. • Giants’ Evan Neal calls out ‘sheep’ fans for booing, later apologizes via social media

Giants’ Evan Neal calls out ‘sheep’ fans for booing, later apologizes via social media

The New York Giants are coming off of an embarrassing performance vs. the Seattle Seahawks in which they fell, 24-3. The offensive line was a major storyline, as Daniel Jones was sacked 10 times, bringing his season total up to 22, which are the fourth-most sacks taken through four games since 2000.

Naturally, MefLife Stadium was full of boos Monday night, and Giants right tackle Evan Neal was shown on the broadcast encouraging the negative noise. On Wednesday, he fired back at fans.

“Why would a lion concern himself with the opinion of a sheep?” Neal told NJ.com. “The person that’s commenting on my performance, what does he do? Flip hot dogs and hamburgers somewhere?”

The former No. 7 overall pick did a lot of winning during his time at Alabama, and he said some of those booing aren’t real fans.

“Because that just further shows that people are fair-weather,” Neal said, (H/T New York Post). “A lot of fans are bandwagoners. I mean, I get it: They want to see us perform well. And I respect all of that. But no one wants us to perform well more than we do.

“And how can you say you’re really a fan when we’re out there battling our asses off — and the game wasn’t going well — but the best you can do is boo your home team?

“So how much of a fan are you, really?”

Neal apologized via X late Wednesday night, but will it be enough to appease the same fans he called out?

Neal was the subject of a lowlight from Monday, when he appeared to block teammate Darren Waller. New York was without left tackle Andrew Thomas in Week 4, and center John Michael Schmitz exited the matchup early with an injury, both of which only added to the struggles on the offensive front.

The Giants are averaging an NFL-low 11.5 points per game this season and have been outscored, 77-9 (-68), in the first half. They are one of just two NFL teams with zero offensive plays run with a lead this season,…

    What to Know

After three games on the road, New Mexico State is heading back home. The New Mexico State Aggies and the FIU Panthers will face off in a Conference USA battle at 9:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Aggie Memorial Stadium. Given that the pair suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this match.

Last Sunday, it was a hard-fought match, but New Mexico State had to settle for a 20-17 loss against Hawaii.

Nobody from New Mexico State had a standout game, but they still got scores from Star Thomas and Monte Watkins.

Meanwhile, FIU took a serious blow against Liberty last Saturday, falling 38-6.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, the Panthers weren’t very productive on the ground and finished the game with only 64 rushing yards. They were smoked by their opponents in that department as Liberty rushed for 364.

New Mexico State’s defeat last Sunday dropped their record down to 2-3, while FIU’s dropped theirs down to 3-2.

In addition to losing their last games, the two teams failed to cover the spread. Looking ahead, New Mexico State is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by six points. FIU might be worth a quick bet since they’re sitting on a three game streak of covering the spread when playing as the underdog.

  • Seahawks knew Daniel Jones likes to stare down his first target

Seahawks knew Daniel Jones likes to stare down his first target

Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon had a sensational game on Monday night, with two sacks and an interception he returned 97 yards for a touchdown. Afterward, he said the Seahawks knew exactly what they had to do to beat Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.

Asked about the Giants’ 11 sacks on Monday night, Witherspoon revealed that the Seahawks expected Jones to show with his eyes who his first option was, and struggle if his first option wasn’t open.

“We were just trusting our game plan that coach laid out for us,” Witherspoon told NFL Media. “We knew he liked to stare down his first target. So he had his back turned, a lot of guys won their one-on-one matchups up front, shout out to our D-line. Without them, we couldn’t have made the plays we made.”

It was a dominant game for the Seahawks’ defense, and a disaster for Jones, who looks nothing like the franchise quarterback the Giants thought they were signing to a long-term contract this offseason.

  • Top 10 Big Ten receiving yardage leaders through Week 5

Top 10 Big Ten receiving yardage leaders through Week 5

Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson may have had the catch of the weekend in the Big Ten when he pinned a football against a Nebraska defender’s helmet to come down with a touchdown catch in the endzone. But it should not be surprising how Wilson scores anymore, as he leads the Big Ten with 8 receiving touchdowns this fall, which is twice as many as the next receiving touchdown leader in the conference after one month of football. Three players in the Big Ten are tied for second with four receiving touchdowns, so Wilson has a nice cushion when it comes to leading the Big Ten in receiving touchdowns.

But Wilson is still working his way up the top 10 receiving yardage leaderboard in the conference. That top spot is still held by Illinois receiver Isaiah Williams, who has zero touchdowns this season.

Penn State’s KeAndre Lambert-Smith sits third among Big Ten receiving leaders after passing the idle Marvin Harrison Jr. of Ohio State this past weekend. Harrison will get a chance to climb back up the Big Ten receiving yardage leaderboard this week when Ohio State returns to action and Penn State and Lambert-Smith get the week off.

Here is a look at the top 10 receiving yardage leaders in the Big Ten through Week 5, the end of September. Here is a look at the top 10 passing yardage leaders in the Big Ten.
