    What to Know

The Buffalo Bills will be playing in front of their home fans against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday at Highmark Stadium. Both of these teams will be coming in off a loss in a game they were expected to win.

Last Sunday, the Bills were within striking distance but couldn’t close the gap as they fell 29-25 to the Patriots.

One of the most dominant came from Josh Allen, who threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. James Cook brought some help for the Bills off the bench as he gained 102 total yards and a touchdown.

  • Deshaun Watson out for Week 8, P.J. Walker will start

Deshaun Watson out for Week 8, P.J. Walker will start

An MRI taken on Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson’s right shoulder after he left last Sunday’s game in the first half reportedly showed no additional damage, but the existing damage is enough to keep him out this week.

Watson missed the previous two Browns games because of the shoulder injury and the team announced before Wednesday’s practice that Watson will not be participating. Head coach Kevin Stefanski announced a short time later that Watson will not play against the Seahawks.

Stefanski said that there is “residual swelling” from the hit that knocked Watson out last Sunday and that the belief is that rehab is the best course for the time being.

They also signed P.J. Walker to the 53-man roster on Wednesday because he was out of practice squad elevations and Stefanski announced that he will start.

Running back Jerome Ford (ankle), wide receiver Marquise Goodwin (back), running back Kareem Hunt (thigh), tight end David Njoku (knee), and linebacker Sione Takitaki (hamstring) are also out of practice for the Browns.

  • Mike Tomlin attributes Kenny Pickett, Steelers’ recent late-game success to being fearless: ‘We play to win’

Mike Tomlin attributes Kenny Pickett, Steelers’ recent late-game success to being fearless: ‘We play to win’

Mike Tomlin has learned something about his team through six games, something that has helped the Pittsburgh Steelers get off to a 4-2 start.

The Steelers’ longtime coach was asked what has led to the Steelers’ recent fourth-quarter success. Over the past two games (both wins), Pittsburgh has outscored the Ravens and Rams by a combined score of 28-0 in the fourth quarter.

“We’re not scared,” Tomlin responded. “We play to win, we don’t play not to lose.”

Tomlin added that his quarterback, Kenny Pickett, shares that mentality. It’s something that compelled the Steelers to select him in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

While he and the Steelers offense haven’t started fast, Pickett and his teammates have had recent success late in games. Against the Ravens, Pickett hit George Pickens for the game-winning score with 1:17 left. Pickett led the offense to 21 second-half points on Sunday that included a pair of scoring drives in the fourth quarter.

“We’re going to continually go to work on more fluid and more productive starts. But it’s a component of it that’s not new, and that’s his ability to rise up in moments,” Tomlin said of Pickett, who has won nine of his last 12 starts.

“I don’t know that any of us are surprised by his ability to make the plays that he makes when it really gets thick. I just think that some people are built like that. Some people relish the opportunity. Some people really smile in the fact of adversity. Some people are competition junkies. I think he’s all of those things, but that’s not something that we just discovered, as I mentioned. It’s something that we knew even prior to him being a Pittsburgh Steeler.”

  • University of Michigan staffer purchased tickets to Oregon game in 2022

University of Michigan staffer purchased tickets to Oregon game in 2022

It looks as if the Oregon Ducks are being included in one of the biggest stories in the college football world relating to the Michigan Wolverines and an apparent sign-stealing scandal that has unfolded over the last week.

The notorious University of Michigan staff member who has been at the center of the controversy over the last week, Connor Stalions, reportedly had intentions of scouting the Oregon Ducks a year ago, hoping to give a competitive edge to the Wolverines in a potential College Football Playoff scenario.

According to Mercury News reporter Jon Wilner, and later confirmed by The Oregonian’s James Crepea, Stalions purchased tickets to the Oregon home game between the Ducks and Washington Huskies in 2022. At the time, Oregon was ranked No. 6 in the nation and had a clear path forward to a spot in the Playoff.

Both Wilner and Crepea report that the purchased seats were behind the visitor’s bench inside Autzen Stadium, with a clear look at the Oregon sideline.

The Big Ten announced last week that Michigan is under NCAA investigation for the alleged sign-stealing operation. Stalions, the staffer who was reported at the center of this operation, has been suspended indefinitely.

ESPN has confirmed that Stalions purchased tickets to more than 35 games at 17 stadiums around the country. He has been reportedly seen in videos sitting in the stands of multiple games, videotaping the opposing sideline in hopes of picking up signals for future opponents, which is against NCAA rules.

In-game sign stealing is not prohibited under NCAA rules but rather is believed to be widely practiced and tolerated in the sport. However, the use of electronics to record the signals of opposing teams and in-person advance scouting at opponents’ stadiums is prohibited.

In a statement last week, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh denied…

  • Maryland co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin arrested, charged for DUI in Florida during team bye week

Maryland co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin arrested, charged for DUI in Florida during team bye week

    USATSI

Maryland co-offensive coordinator and associate head coach Kevin Sumlin was arrested in Florida over the weekend for driving under the influence, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The Terrapins were on a bye week at the time of the arrest, which occurred around 1 a.m. on Saturday in Tampa. There was no crash or damage to property in the incident.

Sumlin pleaded not guilty and waived arraignment. He faces a charge that carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail. According to the report, Sumlin refused a breathalyzer test, which could result in a suspended license for a year.

“Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin,” the university said in a statement. “As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment.”

Maryland hired Sumlin as its co-offensive coordinator early this year, and his presence has been felt on an offensive staff that’s led the Terps to a top-four position among Big Ten teams in points per game. Though a defensive standout at Purdue, Sumlin cut his teeth as an offensive assistant before landing the Houston job. And he most notably coached Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M in 2012. Sumlin was fired following  the 2017 season and amassed a 51-26 record. He later coached at Arizona from 2018 to 2020.

  • Chiefs’ Justyn Ross arrested in Kansas: WR faces felony charge of criminal damage

Chiefs’ Justyn Ross arrested in Kansas: WR faces felony charge of criminal damage

    Getty Images

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Justyn Ross was arrested Monday on a felony charge of criminal damage of more than $25,000, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office booking and release report. The Chiefs told ESPN on Monday evening that they are aware of the arrest, but have no comment at this time.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report indicates Ross was booked Monday afternoon after being arrested in Shawnee, Kansas. No bond was set, per ESPN. The 23-year-old wideout has caught three passes for 34 yards in seven games played this season. In Sunday’s 31-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, Ross played 25% of the Chiefs’ offensive snaps, but was not targeted by quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the passing game.

Ross joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Clemson in 2022. After shining in rookie training camp, Ross was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury, and did not play the entire season.
