2023 Heisman Trophy winner: LSU QB Jayden Daniels claims award becoming third Tigers player to receive honor

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels has won the 2023 Heisman Trophy. Daniels was announced as the award’s recipient Saturday night after totaling 50 touchdowns and nearly 5,000 total yards during a standout senior season. He edged Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Oregon quarterback Bo Nix and Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. for college football’s most prestigious individual honor.

Daniels is the second LSU quarterback in the last five years to capture the Heisman as Joe Burrow claimed the award following a prolific 2019 season. Daniels is the program’s third Heisman winner overall, joining Burrow and running back Billy Cannon, who brought home the award in 1959.

Daniels’ 328-point margin over Penix was the closest since 2018 when Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray beat Tua Tagovailoa by 296 points.

The Heisman win caps a historically productive final season of college football for Daniels, who transferred to LSU in 2022 after three seasons at Arizona State. He emerged as one of the SEC’s premier quarterbacks last season and took his game to soaring heights this year while guiding the Tigers a 9-3 record.

Daniels totaled 3,812 yards passing with 40 touchdowns and just four interceptions while adding 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns as a rusher. He and Johnny Manziel are the only players in SEC history to throw for 3,500 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a single season.

While there are many arguments for what might have constituted a “Heisman moment” for Daniels, two games stood out as built a case for the award. In a Nov. 11 showdown against Florida, he became the only player in FBS history to run for pass for 350 yards and rush for 200 yards in a game as he led LSU to a 52-35 win. Daniels set a new SEC single-game record for total…

    What to Know

The Atlanta Falcons will be playing in front of their home fans against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Atlanta gave up the first points last Sunday, but they didn’t let that get them down. They managed a 13-8 victory over the Jets. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Atlanta.

The team won by holding the Jets to a paltry 259 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to the Falcons’ ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid the passer out four times before it was all said and done. The Jets’ QB won’t forget Bud Dupree anytime soon given Dupree sacked him twice.

Meanwhile, the Buccaneers sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 21-18 victory over the Panthers on Sunday.

The Buccaneers’ victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mike Evans, who picked up 162 receiving yards and a touchdown. Evans’ longest reception was for an incredible 75 yards. Another player making a difference was Rachaad White, who rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown.

The win got Atlanta back to even at 6-6. As for Tampa Bay, their victory bumped their record up to 5-7.

Looking ahead, the game is expected to be close, with the Falcons going off as just a 2.5-point favorite. Bettors picking them against the spread have some confidence (to put it mildly), as the team is sitting on a four-game streak of failing to cover when playing…

  • Florida State working to leave ACC for Big Ten within ‘next month’

Florida State working to leave ACC for Big Ten within ‘next month’

Rumor has it that Florida State will be heading to the Big Ten.

Conference expansion and realignment has been major news item for college football for the last two years and it appears another big shake-up is on the way. On Friday, a report came out that Florida State is working to leave the ACC and join the Big Ten within “the next month.”

Blue Bloods Bias shared a report on the potential massive realignment news (which can be found below) on Friday, and it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise honestly. It’s been no secret that Florida State has wanted to get out of the ACC and the latest College Football Playoff snub may have been the breaking point for the Seminoles.

The Big Ten is set to add four teams this upcoming year — USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington — which will push the league to 18 teams. Should Florida State actually be heading to the Big Ten, my assumption would be another program would join them for an even 20 teams. Programs like North Carolina, Miami (FL), Virginia, Clemson, and of course Notre Dame would be top contenders to group with the Seminoles joining the league.

Click on the tweet below to learn more about this rumor and the potential of the Big Ten adding Florida State soon:

  • DFS building blocks, values and a star to fade

DFS building blocks, values and a star to fade

Whether you’ve played Daily Fantasy on Yahoo before or are giving it a try for the first time, this weekly column will take a look at the DFS landscape, revealing whom I like building lineups around, stars to fade, undervalued plays and bargain bin options to help you construct a better team.

    Lineup building blocks

Christian McCaffrey ($42) vs. Seattle Seahawks

Last week, McCaffrey saw his fewest touches in a game since October and gets a far easier matchup Sunday. CMC leads the NFL with 17 touchdowns, and he faces a Seattle defense allowing the fifth-most fantasy points to running backs. The Seahawks have been vulnerable to receiving backs and have seen their run defense fall dramatically over the last five weeks. The 49ers have the highest implied team total on the DFS slate, so McCaffrey is a building block.

Justin Fields ($34) vs. Detroit Lions

Fields hasn’t had a monster fantasy game since Week 5, but that should change Sunday. His thumb should be healthier following Chicago’s bye, and his 30 rush attempts over his previous two games reveal a ton of fantasy upside. Detroit’s pass defense has been getting destroyed lately, and they’ve struggled especially against mobile quarterbacks. The Lions have ceded the fifth-most passing touchdowns and the fourth-most fantasy points to QBs this season. Fields is a threat to finish as this week’s top-scoring quarterback.

DJ Moore ($25) vs. Detroit Lions

Moore is coming off a bye and should continue to benefit from the return of Justin Fields. Moore has averaged 119 receiving yards and a touchdown over his last six full games with Fields. He’s been fantasy’s No. 2 wide receiver with Fields this season. The Bears get a Lions defense completely falling apart that’s allowing the second-most points per drive over their last six games. Assuming weather cooperates, Moore is in a smash spot facing a Detroit secondary yielding the seventh-most schedule-adjusted fantasy points to wide receivers.

2023-24 college football bowl games: Confidence picks, pool predictions, computer model rankings

There are many ways to build a college football bowl confidence strategy, but using the latest college football bowl odds is among the most popular. College football bowl confidence pools deal with making picks on the straight-up winner, which means double-digit favorites are popular teams to list near the top of bowl confidence picks. There are six such examples in the 2023-24 college football bowl spreads via SportsLine consensus, including Kansas (-12.5) vs. UNLV in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. However, at least one of those heavy favorites could go down, so relying solely on them at the top of your list could be a disastrous strategy.

Star players are also choosing to opt out of certain bowl games, leaving some teams in precarious positions this postseason. Which teams should you avoid with your college football bowl confidence picks? • Jabrill Peppers defends Bill Belichick after Patriots’ win over Steelers, glad ‘we could get it done for Bill’

Jabrill Peppers defends Bill Belichick after Patriots’ win over Steelers, glad ‘we could get it done for Bill’

Bill Belichick had Jabrill Peppers’ back after Peppers’ disparaging comments about the Patriots to Saquon Barkley were turned into public consumption. On Thursday night, it was Peppers who came to his coach’s defense after the Patriots upset the Steelers.

Peppers, who had a big interception late in the first half that led to the Patriots’ game-winning touchdown, spoke glowingly of Belichick after New England’s 21-18 win. The win was just its third of the season, as criticism continues to mount on the outside.

“We needed this,” Peppers said, via ESPN. “I just feel good we could get it done for Bill and the rest of the coaches. They work extremely hard trying to put us in the right places to make plays, and we did enough to get the win tonight.”

Peppers was then specifically asked about Belichick, who continues to face rumors about his future in New England.

“I don’t really like all the flak he’s been getting,” Peppers said, “because it’s on us as players to go out there and execute. I personally feel like the game plan has been phenomenal week in and week out, and we’ve had the opportunities to make the plays and we didn’t make them. But we made enough tonight. So we’re going to correct this tape, get our bodies back and move onto K.C.”

While notoriously known for his gruff demeanor, it’s clear that there’s a side of Belichick that not many on the outside get to see. Belichick has clearly made an impact on Peppers, who was motivated to help his coach get a win on Thursday night.

Belichick made a point to laud the efforts of his team during his postgame press conference. The future Hall of Fame coach appreciated the level of work his players and coaching staff put in on a short week following a disappointing loss to the Chargers last Sunday.

“Thought the guys played with a lot of effort, energy, toughness,” Belichick said after the win. “Our guys really stepped up…

  • Three Tigers named to All-SEC Freshmen Team

Three Tigers named to All-SEC Freshmen Team

Three young Auburn Tigers have received All-SEC Honors.

Kicker Alex McPherson, edge rusher Keldric Faulk, offensive lineman Connor Lew were all named to the All-SEC Freshmen team on Thursday.

McPherson was not only one of the best place-kickers in the country this season, but one of the best kickers period.

The younger brother of Bengals’ kicker Evan McPherson, Alex drilled every single one of his attempts this year, including 13-of-13 field goals and 39-of-39 extra points.

McPherson showed accuracy and power throughout his freshman campaign, connecting on a 53-yard try as well as 3 more attempts from 40-plus yards.

The College Football Network Freshman Kicker of the Year seems ready to continue Auburn’s recent run of strong kickers on the Plains.

Unlike McPherson, Keldric Faulk and Connor Lew weren’t major cogs in head coach Hugh Freeze’s lineup until late in the season.

Lew started Auburn’s last five games, earning Freshmen of the week honors in his first start filling in for the injured Avery Jones against Mississippi State.

The freshmen ran with the momentum, usurping Jones as the starting center for the final stretch of the season.

Lew helped a solid Tigers offensive line become great, specifically against Alabama in the Iron Bowl, when Auburn rushed for 244 yards against the SEC’s College Football Playoff representative.

Edge rusher Keldric Faulk was also a late-bloomer for the Tigers in his first season on the plains.

The freshman started the final 7 games of the season for Auburn, collecting 12 of his 32 total tackles in the final three games of the season.

He played an important role in attempting to shut down Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe in the Iron Bowl, and did a decent job for the most part.

These three freshman will enjoy the honor before retunring to practice to prepare for the Music City Bowl…

  • 5 players you should be worried about ending your season

5 players you should be worried about ending your season

Normally, we would solicit your suggestions for the Panic Meter in an effort to remain focused on the situations of greatest concern to the fantasy football community. This week, however, we are eschewing social engagement, because I have run out of new ways to tell you Lamar Jackson is actually good certain players simply demand our attention.

Here are the five players you need to panic about, if for some reason you were not already actively freaked out…

    Saquon Barkley

Panic level: Petrified. Let’s just try to enjoy the week ahead. 😳

At some point, Barkley should probably identify an injured body part that requires him to sit for the remainder of this lost Giants season. It’s possible he’d like to reach some statistical milestone before he taps out — he’s 303 rushing yards away from 1,000 — but it seems wild for a running back headed into another offseason of contract negotiations to handle significant December workloads for this particular franchise. New York hasn’t given us any indication that they will be aggressively tanking, but, well … we’re talking about a 4-win team. Things could be going better.

Monday night’s home matchup with Green Bay is great for Barkley, but things take a rough turn in Weeks 15-17, facing three defenses that have been among the stingiest to opposing backs: New Orleans, Philly and Los Angeles Rams. When we reach the stage of the season in which he has no obvious incentive to put himself at risk and the matchups are terrible, Saquon-related fantasy panic will hit hard.

    Tua Tagovailoa

Panic level: Dread of the inevitable 11-point fantasy week is rising. 🥵

Like Barkley, Tua has a terrific matchup ahead (Tennessee), so there’s no great concern about his output in Week 14. We’re good.

But then, one week later, we are very much not good — not at all. Tagovailoa closes his fantasy season with as difficult a 3-game stretch as can be imagined. Just look at these games (and please note the way-too-rosy forecasts):

    Tua Tagovailoa’s…
