  • Former Chiefs OL Ed Budde dies at 83

Former Chiefs OL Ed Budde dies at 83

Former Chiefs offensive lineman Ed Budde died Tuesday, his family announced. Budde was 83.

Budde spent his entire 14-year pro career with the Chiefs and entered the team’s Hall of Fame in 1983, seven years after his retirement.

“He was a cornerstone of those early Chiefs teams that brought pro football to Kansas City,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement Tuesday. “He never missed a game in the first nine seasons of his career, and he rightfully earned recognition as an All-Star, a Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion.”

The Chiefs made Budde the eighth overall pick of the AFL in 1963, four picks after the Eagles drafted him in the NFL draft. He chose to sign with Hank Stram’s Chiefs.

Budde appeared in 177 games, starting 161.

He was a leader on the Chiefs teams that won AFL titles in 1966 and ’69, and then beat the Vikings in Super Bowl IV. Budde made five AFL all-star teams and two Pro Bowls.

He was a member of the All-AFL team.

Budde’s son, Brad Budde, was an All-American offensive lineman at Southern California before he was drafted by the Chiefs with the 11th overall pick in 1980. They remain the only father-son duo to be first-round picks by the same NFL franchise.

The elder Budde remained active in the Kansas City area after his playing career. He was one of the 10 founding members of the Kansas City Ambassadors in the early 1990s, and he also served as the longtime president of the Kansas City Chapter of the NFL Alumni organization.

The Highland Park, Michigan, native attended Michigan State, where he earned first-team All America honors in 1962. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.

  • NSD 2023: Ten prospects still on flip watch

NSD 2023: Ten prospects still on flip watch

If Monday was any indication, as three different high-profile flips went down, the rest of National Signing Day Week will be extremely busy.

It will be hard to top No. 1 quarterback Dylan Raiola’s change of heart, switching from UGA to Nebraska on Monday, which is right up there with Travis Hunter as one of the biggest last-minute flips of all time.

But there are several top prospects potentially on the verge of making a similar move come Wednesday. Here are the 10 highest-ranked we have close eyes on as Wednesday approaches.

FLIP MONDAY: Dylan Raiola | Jordan Lyle | Xavier Filsaime

Ohio State has lost traction on multiple commitments down the home stretch, but it’s the nation’s top prospect who could push the perception one way or the other. Hold onto the south Floridian and the day could be viewed as a win. Lose him and no matter what else happens it’s a rough end to the cycle.

Smith has been committed to the Buckeyes for more than a calendar year and has always maintained his plans to attend the university come January barring something unforeseen. Most think Brian Hartline is the most critical cog in Ohio State’s court and he’s still in Columbus, so a move toward Florida State, Miami or Florida would present as that much more crushing.

All things even, Smith is fairly likely to stick but Florida State’s undefeated season and Miami’s recruiting success aren’t to be overlooked until things are official Wednesday afternoon.

Like Smith, Bolden has remained on course with his commitment. He is saying the right things about Mike Norvell’s program and was in Tallahassee over the weekend for his final visit of the recruiting process.

Still, Rivals sources have both Auburn and Georgia continuing to press for the top safety projection in…

  • Aaron Rodgers hints that his 2023 season is over, but he does offer some surprisingly good news for the Jets

Aaron Rodgers hints that his 2023 season is over, but he does offer some surprisingly good news for the Jets

Aaron Rodgers has been practicing with the Jets for almost three weeks now, but at this point, it definitely doesn’t look like he’ll be returning to play in 2023.

During an interview with Pat McAfee on Tuesday, Rodgers revealed that even though he’s been practicing since Nov. 30,  he’s still not 100% recovered from the Achilles injury he suffered back in Week 1.

“If I was 100% today, I’d definitely be pushing to play, but the fact is, I’m not,” Rodgers said. “I’m still 14 weeks from my surgery. And being medically cleared as 100% healed is not realistic at 14 weeks.”

Although there’s been plenty of speculation over the past few weeks about whether Rodgers would be able to return this season, it doesn’t seem like that was ever the plan, at least not for the regular season. According to Rodgers, he thought he might be able to return if the Jets made the playoffs, but getting back for a regular-season game always seemed like a long shot to him.

“I think the whole time, it’s been hoping that we’re still in [the playoff race], because it was unrealistic to think that I’d be 100% medically cleared at any point in the regular season,” Rodgers said. “I do feel like that in the next three to four weeks that it would be possible to get to 100%, but obviously, not there.”

In the best-case scenario, Rodgers thinks he could be ready in three weeks, but with the Jets eliminated from the playoffs their season will be over in three weeks, so there will be no return for him this season.

Dylan Raiola commits to Nebraska: No. 1 QB in 2024 flips from Georgia, becomes program’s highest-rated recruit

Nebraska has landed a game-changing commitment from quarterback Dylan Raiola, the No. 1 signal-caller in the Top247 rankings. Raiola flipped from Georgia after a late charge from the Cornhuskers, he told ESPN on Monday. Raiola becomes the highest-rated recruit in program history.

Raiola had a whirlwind recruitment featuring three commitments and four high schools across the country. He originally committed to Ryan Day and Ohio State in May 2022. After one year, however, he flipped his commitment to Georgia.

Matt Rhule made Raiola a high priority from the the first moment he was hired as Nebraska coach. He is the son of Nebraska consensus All-American Dominic Raiola, whose No. 54 is retired by the program. Dylan’s uncle, Donovan Raiola, is the offensive line coach under Rhule at Nebraska and was retained after Scott Frost was fired in 2022. Even after Raiola committed to Georgia, Nebraska stayed in his ear and managed to schedule an official visit.

Raiola moved to state powerhouse Buford High School in Georgia for his senior season in an effort to be closer to the Bulldogs program. He threw for 2,819 yards, 34 touchdowns and just one interception as a senior during an 11-2 campaign that ended in the state quarterfinals. He previously enrolled at high schools in Arizona and Texas. He played for former NFL quarterback Jon Kitna at Burleson (Texas) as a sophomore.

“A big-armed passer that has what it takes to be the centerpiee of an offense given how he can sling it around the yard from the pocket or on the move,” 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins wrote of Raiola. “Ability to drop the elbow and use baseball-like angles to work around traffic is certainly tantalizing, but regular release is just as impressive as he mirrors…

  • NFL Week 15 grades: Cowboys hit with an ‘F’ for blowout loss to Bills, 49ers earn an ‘A’ for beating Cardinals

NFL Week 15 grades: Cowboys hit with an ‘F’ for blowout loss to Bills, 49ers earn an ‘A’ for beating Cardinals

Welcome to the Week 15 grades!

This was a good week for quarterbacks who are trying to revive their career. In Cleveland, the Browns beat the Bears 20-17 after Joe Flacco mustered some fourth-quarter magic out of nowhere. With the Browns trailing 17-7 in the fourth, Flacco responded by throwing for 212 yards in the FOURTH QUARTER alone.

If you’re wondering how impressive that is: It’s the most by any Browns QB in any quarter since at least 1991. AND it’s the most by any player in the fourth quarter in any game this season.

Another quarterback who had a big day was Baker Mayfield. In Tampa Bay’s 34-20 win, Mayfield completed 22 of 28 passes for 381 yards and four touchdowns. He also finished with a 158.3 QB rating, which made him the first visiting QB in the HISTORY of Lambeau Field to finish with a perfect rating.

With that in mind, let’s get to this week’s grades.
