2026 NFL combine: Kenyon Sadiq breaks TE 40 record, grades for top tight ends

The 2026 NFL Draft tight end class hasn’t generated as much buzz as last year’s group, which produced two first-round picks: Colston Loveland (Bears) and Tyler Warren (Colts). There may be only one tight end to hear his name called Thursday night in April, but the group as a whole impressed Friday in Indianapolis.

In total, 27 tight ends participated at this year’s event, forming the fastest group ever at the annual showcase. Oregon’s Kenyon Sadiq and Vanderbilt’s Eli Stowers also pushed the boundaries in the vertical and broad jumps.

CBS Sports grades the top tight end prospects while also highlighting other standouts.

The 2026 NFL Draft will take place April 23–25 in Pittsburgh. You can find more draft coverage at CBSSports.com, including weekly mock drafts and regular evaluations of the top prospects.

Blogging the Boys fan census: Where in the world do Cowboys fans live?

We’re in that slow period between the Super Bowl and the new league year where it sometimes feels like the NFL world has ground to a halt. And that makes it a perfect time to ask: Where in the world are our Blogging the Boys readers?

We don’t want or need your address or any personal details — sharing just the state is fine, or city and state if you’d like to be more specific. Same thing if you live abroad – if you’d like to just share the country, that’s cool, and if you want to share more details like the city or region, that’s totally up to you.

  • How Michigan State hockey can clinch Big Ten championship on Friday

How Michigan State hockey can clinch Big Ten championship on Friday

Michigan State hockey can clinch a Big Ten championship on Friday night.

With Michigan getting upset by Minnesota on Thursday, the Spartans are now firmly in the drivers seat for a Big Ten championship, and could lock up the title as early as Friday night. If that happens, it’ll be Michigan State’s third straight Big Ten championship in men’s hockey.

So here’s what is in play and what needs to happen in order for the Spartans to clinch either a share or the outright Big Ten championship on Friday:

    Current Teams in Hunt

At the moment, Michigan leads the league with 46 points, with Michigan State right behind with 45 points and Penn State also still in contention with 38 points. While the Wolverines are in first place at the moment, they only have one more game left in the regular season while the Spartans and Nittany Lions each have four games remaining on their schedule.

The remaining four teams in the Big Ten (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio State and Notre Dame) are eliminated and can not play their way into a share of the Big Ten championship.

    Friday’s Schedule

Friday’s slate of games that are relevant to the Big Ten championship includes:

Michigan hosts Minnesota at 6 p.m. ET

Penn State travels to Notre Dame at 7:05 p.m. ET

Michigan State hosts Ohio State at 8:30 p.m. ET

How Michigan State Can Clinch Big Ten Championship

So with the remaining games in place, it’s a pretty simple math equation for how Michigan State can clinch at least a share of the Big Ten championship.

If Michigan and Penn State both lose tonight in regulation (0 points for each), and Michigan State beats Ohio State in regulation (3 points), then the Spartans have clinched the outright Big Ten championship for a third straight season. If Michigan loses in regulation (0 points), Penn State loses in overtime or a shootout (1 point), and…

  • NFL combine Day 1 standouts; Max Scherzer re-signs with Blue Jays; NBA Concern Meter

NFL combine Day 1 standouts; Max Scherzer re-signs with Blue Jays; NBA Concern Meter

This is an article version of the CBS Sports HQ AM Newsletter, the ultimate guide to every day in sports. You can sign up to get it in your inbox every weekday morning here.

Good morning and happy Friday! Just like that, the shortest month of the year is almost done. Carter Bahns with you to close out February and look ahead to the start of March in the world of sports. If one thing comes to mind when I think of March, it’s the NCAA Tournament. We have an absolutely massive weekend of college basketball ahead of us to help set the stage for the Big Dance, which is right around the corner.

The NFL combine is also highly deserving of our attention over the next few days, and the push to the NBA playoffs is really heating up.

    Let’s talk about it.

🏋️ Five things to know Friday

The NFL Scouting Combine is underway in Indianapolis. The first batch of players checked into the combine on Thursday with edge rushers, defensive linemen and linebackers taking the stage first. Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. was the talk of the day as arm length once again became a point of concern. Bain’s sub-31-inch arms are among the shortest for an edge rusher in recent combine history. It was a good day to be Sonny Styles, though. The Ohio State product ran the fastest 40-yard dash (4.46) of any linebacker and led the position with a 43.50″ vertical jump en route to our only “A+” grade of the day. And on the defensive line, we gave Caleb Banks and Lee Hunter “B+” grades as top performers.Max Scherzer will spend his 19th MLB season in Toronto. “Mad Max” has at least one more year in him, and he will return to the Blue Jays after agreeing to re-sign with the reigning American League champions. The 41-year-old pitcher reportedly agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract that is rich with incentives, and Scherzer is likely to climb into the top 10 in career strikeouts this season. The Jets and Titans pulled off a trade.…..

  • Cincinnati sues ex-QB Brendan Sorsby for $1 million buyout after transfer to Texas Tech

Cincinnati sues ex-QB Brendan Sorsby for $1 million buyout after transfer to Texas Tech

The University of Cincinnati is suing former quarterback Brendan Sorsby for breach of contract and is seeking a $1 million buyout after his transfer to Texas Tech this offseason, according to court documents obtained by The Athletic. Cincinnati claims Sorsby broke a revenue-sharing agreement with the school and owes the university money under the conditions of the deal.

Per The Athletic, the lawsuit claims Sorsby signed an “18-month, two-season” agreement with Cincinnati that ran through Dec. 15, 2026, with a $1 million buyout due within 30 days if Sorsby “transferred to another university before completion of the agreement’s full term.”

Sorsby signed with Texas Tech in January on one of college football’s most lucrative portal deals — reportedly worth more than $4 million. Ranked as a five-star transfer and the No. 2 overall player in the portal by 247Sports, Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns with seven scores on the ground in 2025, his second season as the starter for the Bearcats.

Coming off its first College Football Playoff appearance in program history after winning the Big 12, Texas Tech made Sorsby a priority on the transfer market following the exit of Behren Morton. Texas Tech celebrated the signing of Sorsby with advertisements posted in New York City. Texas Tech posted a welcome message on Times Square’s famous digital billboards to flex the gem of its portal haul.

“We’re fired up about Sorsby,” Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire said in an interview with WFAA last month. “Lake Dallas kid. He’s back home in Texas. I think he’s an elite quarterback. He’ll play on Sundays, and he’s going to be a great leader for us.”

Cincinnati coach Scott Satterfield spoke on Sorby’s portal entry in December, saying his numbers…

  • Sean Payton shows he’s still growing as an NFL coach by handing off play-calling | Opinion

Sean Payton shows he’s still growing as an NFL coach by handing off play-calling | Opinion

INDIANAPOLIS – In another time and place, you could have bet your bottom dollar that there’s no way Sean Payton would willingly give up calling the plays.

Not him. Payton has for a long time been one of the NFL’s sharpest minds when it comes to designing and running an offense. A former quarterback, he was made for the challenge of drawing up some scheme and then springing it to life at the perfect time – like Bill Walsh, Mike Shanahan or Mike Holmgren used to do – and absolutely loved it.

It seemed like a lifeline for Payton.

Yet as the Denver Broncos coach explained his decision to turn over the play-calling to rising coaching star Davis Webb during his media session at the NFL combine this week – the most shocking news to emerge as powerbrokers gather to formulate the league’s epicenter in the ramp-up to the draft and free agency – it was apparent that this is clearly a different time and place in the arc of Payton’s journey.

Someone asked why and Payton didn’t stutter. He didn’t dismiss the influence of wanting to ensure that Webb remains on his staff. At least for now.

“You have coaches that you definitely want to retain,” Payton said, mindful of the interest in Webb on an NFL landscape that, fair or not, continues to favor young, offensive-minded coaches. “It’s never going to be quite on your timeline.”

The more he talked about Webb, a 31-year-old former quarterback with a lot of swag, the more he sounded like he was describing a younger version of himself.

  • Titans’ cap space balloons to nearly $100 million after releasing two starters

Titans’ cap space balloons to nearly $100 million after releasing two starters

The Tennessee Titans entered Wednesday with almost $100 million in cap space, the most in the NFL. That number increased after the team decided to release veterans Lloyd Cushenberry and Xavier Woods with the official start of free agency just two weeks away.

Tennessee will save about $3.4 million in salary cap space by parting with Cushenberry, who was released with a failed physical designation. They’ll save roughly $4 million in cap space by releasing Woods, a veteran safety who played in 11 games last year before a hamstring injury ended his season.

A former third-round pick of the Denver Broncos, Cushenberry was released less than two years after the Titans signed him to a four-year, $50 million contract. An Achilles injury, however, sidelined him for the final games of the 2024 season. He played in 15 games this past season after starting the year on the team’s physically unable to perform list.

  • Top 2027 high school football recruits in the state of Ohio

Top 2027 high school football recruits in the state of Ohio

You can never sleep on Ohio when it comes to producing high school football talent. The state isn’t at the level of Florida or Texas, but it is certainly among the second tier.

Looking at the 2027 cycle, there’s another slew of talent set to come out of the state. On Monday, the Rivals300 rankings were updated and 13 prospects from the state were included.

Of those 13, five are already committed. Ohio State has a pair of huge in-state pledges from interior offensive lineman Kellen Wymer and wide receiver Jamier Brown. Below is a look at the top 2027 prospects from Ohio, per the Rivals300.

    1. IOL Kellen Wymer — Ohio State commit

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 31 NATL. (No. 3 IOL)
    School: Liberty Center

Wymer was one of the biggest risers in the new Rivals300 update, moving from No. 70 up to No. 31. He committed to Ohio State on Nov. 2 and looks to be rock-solid with the Buckeyes. Rivals’ Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power said this of Wymer earlier this week: “I think there’s a case to be made that he might be the most natural mover and explosive mover of all the offensive linemen nationally. He can really, really scoot at the second level.”

    2. WR Jamier Brown — Ohio State commit

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 48 NATL. (No. 7 WR)
    School: Big Walnut

An industry five-star, Brown has been committed to the Buckeyes since Nov. 23, 2024. He remains locked in with OSU despite the departure of touted receivers coach Brian Hartline. Looking to be the next great pass-catcher for the Big Ten juggernaut, Brown helps headline the Buckeyes’ early haul. Rivals reported last month that Brown is transferring from Wayne High to Big Walnut for his senior season.

    3. CB Ace Alston — Notre Dame commit

Rivals300 Ranking: No. 72 NATL. (No. 10 CB)
    School: Anderson
