Nick Chubb free agency: Houston Texans expected to sign veteran RB, per report

Veteran free agent running back Nick Chubb is expected to sign with the Houston Texans on Monday if he passes a team physical, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Chubb, one of the best available players on the free-agent market, is on the verge of finding a new home in the AFC after a return to the Cleveland Browns became “increasingly unlikely.” The Texans could pair Joe Mixon with the four-time Pro Bowler to shore up their backfield, which lacked reliable playmaking in 2024 when Mixon was off the field.

A move to Houston would clear a path to playing time for Chubb, who would find himself in a crowded running back room if he would have re-signed with Cleveland. The Browns selected Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson in the second and fourth rounds of the NFL Draft and brought Jerome Ford back from last year’s roster. Investing in those other options made Chubb the odd man out in Cleveland.

“I was told that he’s hoping to sign here soon, and maybe he gets something done before a minicamp, gets into a team,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said Sunday on SportsCenter. “The return to Cleveland’s not totally off the table, from what I’m told, but probably unlikely because of their draft plans; they drafted multiple running backs. I’m told Houston could be one to watch here. They’ve been looking at that running back market, maybe adding somebody with Joe Mixon.”

Mixon paced the Texans backfield last season with a dynamic 1,016-yard, 11 touchdown season, but rushing production lacked outside of his efforts. Dameon Pierce was the No. 2 option and accumulated a modest 293 yards and two…

  • John Harbaugh: Jon Gruden observed OTAs, gave us great insight

John Harbaugh: Jon Gruden observed OTAs, gave us great insight

John Harbaugh welcomed another Super Bowl-winning head coach to Ravens OTAs this offseason.

Former Buccaneers and Raiders head coach Jon Gruden observed the team’s workouts on Thursday and Friday this week. Harbaugh said that Gruden’s outside view provided the team with valuable information.

“He loves football, he’s a great football coach, great football mind,” Harbaugh said, via the team’s website. “He studied our team, gave us some insight — players, coaches, schemes, all of it. We didn’t give him the playbook, we didn’t give him a script either. You can only go so far. He studied us. Basically, the message was, ‘If I was game planning against you on defense, what would I do, how would I attack you?’ He didn’t just stop there. He watched our offensive guys. He had something for each player. Very, very detailed.”

Gruden has been out of coaching since being resigning from the Raiders in 2021 in the wake of the release of offensive emails, but said earlier this year that he still hopes to return to the sideline. That may not happen, but the Ravens may still benefit from his acumen this season.

  • College football teams generating major buzz: Texas, Michigan among hype trains rolling ahead of 2025 season

College football teams generating major buzz: Texas, Michigan among hype trains rolling ahead of 2025 season

Hope springs eternal for every college football team each offseason, but some teams’ lofty expectations are more realistic than others. Those that fill key roster needs, boast rising stars or make impressive coaching changes generate the most hype from December to August, and a number of College Football Playoff hopefuls did just that in 2025. Teams including Texas Tech and Miami could be on the verge of their College Football Playoff debuts after they loaded up on highly touted transfer portal talent, to name just two.

Offseason hype is a double-edged sword, though. While it directs more attention to exciting programs, it also has a tendency to create unfair or unattainable goals. Failing to deliver on the buzz is never optimal for a coach’s job security, whether it is warranted or not. Fanbase morale also takes a hit with every disappointing loss.

Not every promising team from this offseason can punch a playoff ticket. Some will, but others will disprove the narratives that propped them up all spring and summer.

    Getty Images

Former All-Pro defensive back Adam “Pacman” Jones was arrested early Saturday after being charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place, disorderly conduct and assault of a police officer or a probation officer, according to court records (h/t ESPN).

Jones, 41, was arrested by the Covington Police Department and was booked just before 2 a.m. into Kenton County Jail. He later posted a $10,000 bond and was released around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Saturday marked at least the fourth time Jones has been arrested since 2021 and is the third consecutive year that he has been booked on a public intoxication charge.

In 2021, Jones pled no contest to two counts of misdemeanor assault for an altercation at a Cincinnati bar and later served 18 days in jail. In 2023, Jones was taken off a flight and was later charged with alcohol intoxication, disorderly conduct and terroristic threatening. Jones was then arrested in 2024 for public intoxication and assaulting a peace officer while attending the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing event.

A former sixth overall pick, Jones played 12 years in the NFL. He broke into the NFL with the Titans, where he played for two years before he was suspended for the entire 2007 season after he violated the league’s personal conduct policy. Jones then signed with the Cowboys, who released him after team officials learned that he was the suspect in a June 2007 shooting outside an Atlanta gentlemen’s club.

After spending a year playing in the Canadian Football League, Jones signed with the Bengals in 2010 and remained through the 2017 season. Jones made 108 starts during his time in Cincinnati while helping the Bengals win two division titles. The Bengals also made the playoffs five…

  • Missouri State football adds QB to 2026 class

Missouri State football adds QB to 2026 class

Missouri State football added an in-state quarterback commitment to its 2026 recruiting class.

Parkway West (Ballwin) rising senior Brett Ottensmeyer announced his commitment to the Bears on Saturday evening. He is the first publicly known 2026 recruit to commit to Ryan Beard and the Bears, who have been active in offering the class in recent weeks.

Ottensmeyer lists himself at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds. He’s not ranked by any of the major recruiting outlets. He held offers from Sacramento State, Lindenwood, Miami (Ohio) and Kent State.

The 2024 high school season in the St. Louis area saw him complete 66.3% of his passes for 2,484 yards, 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His rushing numbers are limited.

Ottensmeyer would join what is currently a crowded quarterback room for the post-Jacob Clark era, when the team competes in its first season of bowl eligibility. Eastern Michigan transfer Drew Viotto was brought in this offseason, and coaches have liked the growth in Cole Feuerbacher and Elijah Leonard. Incoming freshman Deuce Bailey (Bowling Green, Kentucky) is the highest-ranked quarterback the Bears have ever landed out of high school.

Ottensmeyer was quick to commit to the Bears after being offered a scholarship on May 21. He posted a picture of himself on his X account alongside offensive coordinator Nick Petrino and offensive line coach Max Halpin on Tuesday.

Around 30 minutes later, police received a call from Joseph, who said that he had been involved in the crash, per local reports.

Joseph, 25, was arrested just before 8 a.m. and charged with driving while intoxicated and a collision involving death, according to Richardson PD records. Joseph is currently being held by the Richardson PD; no bond has been set.

  • 2025 NFL OTA takeaways: Shedeur Sanders hype gaining steam; Colts’ Anthony Richardson out indefinitely

2025 NFL OTA takeaways: Shedeur Sanders hype gaining steam; Colts’ Anthony Richardson out indefinitely

With the calendar flipping from May to June, it’s time for organized team activities (OTAs) all around the league. All 32 teams have turned the page from all things 2024 and are now gathering and getting themselves ready for the upcoming 2025 season.

This is the first time we’re getting to see or hear from a lot of veteran players since last season ended — or since they signed with or got traded to their new teams this offseason — so it’s an important time to take stock of some of the various goings-on around the league.

With that in mind, let’s highlight a few of the key takeaways from the first week of OTA action around the NFL.

All aboard the Shedeur Sanders hype train

Sanders is having a strong start to minicamp, creating a lot of hype regarding whether he can earn the starting job in Week 1. The quarterback stats are there, but keep in mind all players are wearing shells and shorts. It’s not surprising to see a player look good in the early portion of OTAs. Sanders did go 9 of 14 with three touchdowns in the second OTA practice open to the media this week, while third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel went 11 of 20 for three touchdowns.

Training camp will be the tell-tale sign.

Richardson sidelined; Jones getting Colts’ first-team reps

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is sidelined with a right shoulder injury, head coach Shane Steichen announced. Richardson aggravated the AC joint in his throwing shoulder that plagued him last season and he will be out indefinitely. The Colts hope to have Steichen back by minicamp.

Daniel Jones will get all the first-team reps with Richardson out. Jones may have the upper hand in the race for the starting quarterback job.

Giants OTA session end early after multiple fights

Things got a little heated during New York’s sixth OTA session on Thursday. So much so that the session ended early due a string of fights. Pass rusher Brian Burns and…
